Filson's Journeyman is the best-looking and most practical backpack you can buy!
It is made as a standard backpack, with a large main compartment and a large front pocket. The main compartment closes with a two-way brass Filson zipper, aided by leather pulls on each of the zipper pulls. It can also be closed without using the zipper, as the backpack has been designed so that the top constitutes a small flap that covers the zipper (and hence the opening) which can be fastened using a leather strap and stud fastening. This is just one of the very clever design features of this backpack!
The main compartment has a lightly padded rear sleeve for a laptop or similar, a second, unpadded front sleeve, and a zippered pocket, also at the front.
The expandable front pocket has a small interior sleeve for small items and two small pencil sleeves for writing implements.
The front pocket is flapped, and closes with a leather strap and presstud, like the main compartment. Incidentally, the press-studs are very cleverly designed--they are located on a small strip of cloth that you can lopped a finger round, so you can easily open the fastening with just one hand--not two, as is usual for presstuds. Very, very neat indeed!
The main compartment is reinforced at the end of the zippers with a gusset of Tin Cloth--a feature you'll unlikely to notice but which speaks to the attention to detail involved in this bag.
The Journeyman is made from classic Filson waxed Tin Cloth, which is water-repellent and extremely durable. The lower part and bottom of the bag have an extra layer of this, making this a seriously sturdy bag for every day use.
The back straps are very cleverly contoured so this is comfortable to carry; they are also lightly padded and have soft moleskin pads on the area where they meet your back. They attach to at the bottom by adjustable bridle leather straps, with Filson brass buckles.
The backpack also features a sturdy carrying handle, in bridle leather.
The rear of the backpack is padded and appears unwaxed, so there'll be no wax transfer.
All of the leather components are Filson's bridle leather; the studs are Filson-branded brass studs, and the zipper is a heavy-duty Filson-branded YKK zip.
This is a very very handsome and functional bag indeed!
This bag was Made in the USA--note that Filson NO LONGER makes its Journeyman bags in the USA, but has offshored their production. This is thus more desirable than Filson's current Journeymans!
This bag has some very mild surface marks commensurate with being used sparingly; it also has a couple of minor scruffs on the lining by the zipper of the interior compartment, as shown, and some minor cosmetic "speckling" on the "floor" of inside, as shown. It is thus in Very Good/Excellent condition.
