Film Noir Honored at Oscars

Did anyone catch that? It was presented by Lauren Bacall. It was cool....but I didn't understand what it was all about. They had all kinds of footage from golden era noir films. I must have not followed close enough attention.

Didn't anyone get it?

I don't know if we were supposed to "get" anything, but I wish they'd labeled the clips so I could hit the video store -- I haven't seen most of those before.

Not a bad ceremony overall, but nothing really to talk about, either.

I saw it. It was a neat collection of very brief clips. Didn't seem to have any real point to it...but the Academy Awards isn't about having a point...
Still, it reminds you of some terrific films. It was good to see that Lauren Bacall is still in good health.
If I think about that segment it helps me to forget that horrible song they gave an Oscar too! I think they should leave that stuff for the MTV Awards and stop trying to appear hip! Sheeesh...!

It didn't seem (from my point of view) something but as with most, it was cool, I thought it might have been done or related to best picture but I was wrong, so count me in "didn't get it" .
Right on the money, it was cool, or great to see Lauren Bacall, she is known to speak her mind about hollywood today, she gets small bit parts from time to time and like Shirley MacLaine they rarely get respects well deserved, she forever live in Film Noir, a classic dame.
I also agree with the song, sending wrong message to our black (pimps?) brothers & sisters, no matter how "so called cool" it was suppose to be. Tell the real story of pimps & whores, then go forth and say how cool it is. This part was a major disappointment, didn't belong on Oscar night.
God Bless Lauren Bacall, cheers honey :cheers1:

I saw this segment too. My wife and I commented why this was done. I am glad the genre was brought up.

Was this the segment where Jon Stewart commented how great they would be in color? lol :eusa_clap lol
That was a great comment!

They had many clip montages last night. . . so many that Stewart even joked about having a montage of the montages. They were all to celebrate the history of movies and the Academy. . .keeping in theme for the night.
I know I enjoyed the montages more than everyone's speeches. The noir one was particularly interesting. Bacall is, as she ever was, stunning. I could listen to her and Morgan Freeman read the telephone book.

That made me happy too. We had the Oscars on in the background, so I almost missed it. I'm not a big fan of awards ceremonies; it seems such a waste of money and set designers efforts ... much ado about nothing. Oops, sorry, I'm being negative. I hope I didn't offend any of you who may have been in attendance.

My favorite part was the film noir clips. Also the commentary by Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin on Altman.

My poor dear mother was so turned off by the pimp song, she went in the back bedroom to watch another channel.

What was the comment made by, I believe, Stewart? -- that a pimp is like your agent, but with a better hat.

Wonder if that crack will keep Mr. and Mrs. USA away from the fur felts.

Vanessa, Thanks, helps clear things in my head, being hearing impaired, I have to strain reading captions, as they fly by so quickly, so I tend to miss bits, here and there.
I too could listen to Bacall and Freeman endlessly. Lauren Bacall has such a rich history, many could learn from her, film noir is a lost art.
Thanks again

None taken, your doing fine, I also am not a fan of award shows, although I was rooting for Joaquin Phoenix, since I'm a big fan of Johnny Cash. winning isn't so important

I saw something about the stage design last week on TV, about how this years theme was to have a classic Hollywood look. Everything was all Deco and Streamlined which looked really great. They also made it all in shades of gray to it would have this black and white kind of look. They even showed the green room where the presenters wait and it was done up the same way, down to reproductions of the best picture movies posters in black and white. I think the Noir montage was just something else for that theme.

Oscar Oscar

I passed on watching the Oscar's thus year, but:

1. Was nice to hear Ms Becall was recognized.

2. The first Oscar ceremony must have been great when
the awards were just "handed out" no big deal!

SC :)

When I stayed at the Biltmore in downtown LA, (where numerous Golden Era motion pictures were shot), there were great big B&W photos of the first Oscar ceremony which was held at this hotel.

It was great.

In fact, I'd recommend any LA visitors to pop into the Biltmore to see these photos.

This was my FAVORITE part of the Oscars. Lauren Becall presented the film clips as a salute, tribute to Film Noir motion picture era and the studios, actors and directors that produced them.

Here is a link to a Quicktime film of the entire presentation:

Long live Film Noir....
