To be honest I don't like the way waiting time is used to hype the brand or the product. It just means that there is demand.

I don't think having a long waiting time is a measure of quality, it just means that you have a long queue because you're a one man operation and can't do all the work needed in a sensible time due to the limitations of being a single Staff member. In the end it means that the time spent doing leatherwork is not as high as it could be because he is also replying emails, taking photos, sharing photos, etc.

I hope he just closes the list when the waiting time gets close to 1 year...that's a lot of time. Don't want to repeat JC mistakes.

Agreed. For a one man operation, having slots is absolutely essential. Pretty much every artist that sells their work online will periodically open 10 or so empty slot on the first come, first served basis and that's it until the next batch. Even Ship John does it (though in their case, it can only be a marketing stunt as there's no way they couldn't put together as little as 1 of those Wills jackets per day).
Piling up orders is a road to TOJ and we all know how that turned out.

On a personal note, wait time immediately kills my interest. Not saying there's anything wrong with it and I can't even discern why would this be so, it ought not to be a problem for me since I'll just be browsing clothes anyway whilst waiting, but it's just something I am feeling very reluctant to commit myself to.

Maybe Greg doesn't want it to be a big company?
Suppose he is happy to do every detail himself, to take care of social media, to take pictures etc. Then he makes his 5-6 jackets a month and the price will increase according to supply and demand and bring him a good income.
The risk is that prices and waiting times will rise to such an extent that customers will decline and stop playing the game.
In addition, there is a risk of being unable to work due to illness/accident at a one man show.
In this respect we can be curious to see in which direction all of this will develop.
I'm sure not to speak of a hype with a backlog of an estimated 50 jackets.

I have been thinking that too. Greg started as a dude who loves to make leather jackets only one year ago. I believe, it would be a major change for him to start to run a company, hire and pay people etc. And what if the current wave of orders subsides because there´s a new kid on the block...?

I would think, the most likely route to more efficiency for him is to cut back on individualisation. At the moment everybody and their dog (stole that phrase here; thanks much, Monitor!) can approach him re new patterns, design elements, even hides.

Anyway, I spoke to him yesterday, and he seems really happy about all the positive attention. As long as it stays like this, all is good. I mean, the waiting list is an issue for us customers, right?!

I’ve noticed a trend in successful businesses. Usually it’s two people. One is the marketing, and one is the creative. The problem with a “one man show” is that there isn’t really time for both. If Greg goes to a trade show to get more business, the jackets aren’t being made and the business suffers. Same goes for the inverse: no marketing= no new work at some point. He’s off to a great start, and I hope he makes insightful decisions going forward.

He can always hire Julie Leitch.

..and Stuart Clurman for the marketing.

Field Leathers Frankenstein shameless plug again. I do believe the hype is real but it is well worth the attention it's getting. Case in point

Perfect fit, Jin !!

Thanks @HoosierDaddy! Much Appreciated!

Great jacket and fit...even better tucked in shirt haha

Amen! Tuck for the win.

Thanks guys hahaha I don't know @powerserge @dudewuttheheck I might be in the process of converting! It makes sense to me now to tuck the shirt in when the jacket is so short for a better look.

That jacket is spectacular, looks great on you and it's so neatly made.

Thanks man! It's going to be a jacket that will be worn a lot!
