Female attitude towards fashion.

:cheers1: I think that most people show their level of psychological security the first time they try anything new. whether it be donning a hat or new suit or new dress. I sell hats to women at craft fairs. There is always that group of women that think wearing a hat is a joke. They place hats on their heads badly then amuse themselves with this activity. I usually smile and offer one that will really look good. You'd be suprised how many hats Ive sold this way.:cool2:
What is it with your wife???? My husband of 5 years was a hat wearer when I met him. He was wearing sweaty baseball caps. I went and bought him one without the sweat. He now wears a straw fedora in the summer and a version of a felt gambler in the winter. Ask your wife to buy you the perfect hat for your next birthday.:)
If this doesnt work thennnnnnnn take her away from the kids for a romantic weekend..... if this doesnt work start thinking about a good lawyer.... just kidding.
As a man of style please continue to wear hats. I am sure you're a knockout in one....Cheers to you:beer:

Its got to be difficult for partners but I just wonder how long it takes before they settle with the new look. I guess we all get the picture, suddenly hubby or wifey start wearing smart hats and smarter clothes and taking an interest in their appearance probably after years of complacency. The thought has to be, "whats happened, who are they trying to impress?" so I can understand the insecurities. I generally wear a hat when out of doors nowadays, even walking the kids to school where just about every other parent doing the same is female.

A few days ago I was at the ballet with my wife, an expensive night out and a rarity for us. I got one guy sing a line from singing in the rain as I was walking out of the opera house, the usual behind the back snipe. The first comment for a long time, good or bad. I should have smiled and sung a line of "Im just a teenage dirtbag baby" but it didnt spring to mind at the time. Its nicely categorised in my head for future use though. Mind you, not sure if this guy was taking a dig or if it was a little outing for jealousy of the "Wish I had the guts, so Ill just big myself a bit by saying something witty." If I had not been with my wife I would have probably stopped and made him walk round me on the stairs then said, "Sorry mate, didnt quite catch the remark your kid made. Oh was it you? Dont worry, Im not angry with you if youve got terrets syndrome or youre just a twit or something." Now that was sitting on the tip of my tongue. Instead I just turned and smiled to show I had heard him but thought he was a bit of a loser.

Regarding society's (or more particularly women's) attitudes towards men wearing hats - I found the following illuminating tidbit in a 2009 post at the "This day in history" thread, made by LizzieMaine:

Daily News, July 15, 1938

The Inquiring Fotographer

By Jimmy Jemail

The Question:

Would you rather have your escort wear a straw or summer felt hat, or go bareheaded.

The Place:

Broadway at W. 52nd Street.

The Answers:

Abby Stevens, Popham Ave., Bronx, Actress: I much prefer him to wear a sporty Panama hat, one of the soft fine-weave variety, because it is the most comfortable hat that a man can wear, and it lends dash to his appearance. However, an older man would look more dignified and precise in a straw hat.

Ann Lieberman, Middle Village, L. I., secretary: The summer weight felt hat. Most men look so much better in felt hats, and the lightweights are cool enough to wear in summer. It is easier to fit a felt hat to a man's face. And I wouldn't be seen with a man who had no hat. He looks half dressed.

Edith Berthold, Detroit, teacher: I like straw hats if they fit a man's face, but not all men can wear them. For the younger men, I am partial to the summer weight felt hat in cheerful Summer colors, and I don't object to the Panama. But I absolutely detest the practice of going around the city streets without a hat. Why do they do it?

Whistlebait, I knew it would come to this :) The realisation that men just can't win....
I spent years as a scruffy sloppy couldn't care less about his appearance man....No luck with the ladies.
So I change and start to dress better and look at hats and fashion, and you tell me that us men are vain
From now on I shall go naked into the world, my reproductive organs freely blowing in the breeze, except for my fedora planted on my head....Do you think this would work?

Jeff.

As Mark Twain said "Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society"

How about "Tourettes is a terrible affliction"?

Rolls off the tongue a bit better and good for a quick getaway :)

You let someone try on your hat? Would your friend mind if you tried on his trousers? Or borrow his comb?

"I like that belt y'all are wearin', mind if I try it on? Here let me help you take it off."

If someone wants to try on my hat, I politely say "no".

lol.......

Is anyone in touch with Vespasian (the OP)? It's good that this thread has been revived, but Vespasian has neither posted nor visited for a long time, and his postings are some of the best on the forum. Could anyone persuade him to return? It's a pity when good contributors disappear.
