Fedoras vs. Cars

Can anybody recommend a fedora that will be compatible with the convertible I drive?

As I'm sure you already know, today's automobiles are equipped with head restraints, and I consider that a good thing. But head restraints wreak havoc on the brims of my fedoras.

One solution is to wear a bill cap, except I'm tired of wearing bill caps. I want a fedora. Specifically, I want a felt fedora with a 2.5-inch snap brim.

What to do?

I had thought a crushable would solve my problem, so I bought a Bailey's Blixen last summer before driving 2,000 miles to Montana. It wasn't as nice as my fur felt hats, but it worked. Except, four months later, the hat developed a whole lot of fade spots.

When I went back to the store, I was told I had obviously gotten something on the hat. Well, there might have been some light rain, but I wouldn't think a little water should damage the felt. And whatever damaged the felt had no effect on the band.

My best guess was that the felt was somehow defective. Then it occurred to me that the problem might be inherent in the material itself, which is LiteFelt wool. Now, I'm reluctant to buy any crushable felt.

Any advice?

Happy to say that won't be necessary. With today's convertibles (or at least my convertible), my hat stayed on while I drove 90 mph across Wyoming.

Driving a convertible, I would be more concerned about the wind, but, I know just the car for you. It will give you fun, kudos and a great place to show off your fedora hat!

But if you think you are just little over the convertible age, not to worry, MG have thought about that and produced a sedan version. Your hat definitely won't blow away in that!

That sedan, I can personally vouch for that car:

I drove an MG long enough to learn that I'm not a good enough mechanic to own one now (have to admit, it was still a fun car). Then again, no head restraints to screw up my hats.

Very cool and classy...and the cars are not bad either!

I have not had any issues with my fur felt fedoras and headrest. I’ve worn my fedoras in my wife’s Toyota, my Lincoln, and my work truck (Silverado). I also have a classic convertible, no headrest. On the fore mentioned, I just adjust the seat back one click to provide clearance between the headrest and the hat brim.

Me neither, but like you, I'm a little tall, and I think that helps, too. I tend to keep my seat back a little reclined, as well, and don't usually have a problem.

Your post made me laugh. I have never been “accused” of being a little tall. I’m 5-9, so thank you for that. I will have to copy this post and send it to my older brother. He calls me “shortie”! Now I have proof, I’m a little tall.

Have a safe and blessed New Year!

I have a problem when I drive my Lamborghini Huracan. I have to either wear a ball cap or take the coupe.

I would have a problem with it too, like getting in and out of it. At work I was asked if I could move a truck that was causing an obstruction. Looking at the five steps up to the cab, I said: "If it had a stair lift, no problem!"

LOL, you always looked bigger in the pics I've seen of you. Probably it's your outsize personality. I'm just 6'0", so I'm not real tall, but I do extend above my seat backs a bit.

I suppose it's possible I'll outgrow the problem, but I'm skeptical. Probably have to stretch my neck another 6 inches or so to clear the seat.

Meanwhile, does anybody know of a crushable fur felt? Or perhaps a LiteFelt crushable that won't stain in a sprinkle?

LiteFelt? Quick: turnaround three times and spit! ;)
Why not a nice 8-panel cap or similar while driving and then a fedora when you get out? You can even leave your Italian leather driving gloves in your cap when not wearing it.

A fedora gives me better sun protection than an eight-panel (the dermatologist loves my fedoras), on top of which the fedora just looks better. And if I can't find a suitable fedora, I might as well keep using a baseball cap. I've got dozens of the damn things laying around the house.

Here's a question: Am I correct in assuming all crushable wool fedoras are LiteFelt?
