Cooler this afternoon so I went with a Stetson 4X Open Road (and some flannel) as we mapped the NW corner. The site of the "three acre exception" that was finally settled in 1972. It is the location of a large natural spring and, formerly, a moonshine still.

Cool images. Has this property been in your family/possession for a long time? Are there any remnants of the still? Sounds like a dig is in order!

Red -- thanks for asking. My wife's grandfather bought this place in 1967. The neighbor claims that the "foundation" of the still is there, but it just looks like natural rock to me. Might have to fire up a still down there sometime in the future. At least we can tell where the mill was (just in front of our house). Grandpa rebuilt the wheel in the 1970s and had a flume running from the lake up around the bend. We lost the lake dam 10 years ago to a flash flood and I don't have the funds to rebuild it or the mill wheel.

I love this picture! It has historical character, it looks much older than the 70s.

I used to compete with a compound crossbow. On practice times, sometimes I just grab a initiation bow and throw some arrows. The "pro" bows were too "hard".
Fun times and I didn't wear a hat back then.

The longbow is only 40 lbs. draw weight, it is easy and smooth. I am trading the guy who made it another bow to make me a second one just a few lbs heavier draw. Either one will work for taking a deer with a sharp 2 blade broadhead. I gave up shooting heavy draw bows because of shoulder issues. Your hats would be an issue with shooting a bow, my tiny little hats with soft brims work fine :D

Don't know if Newport, Rhode Island is considered "afield," but that's where we went for an evening on Saturday. I wore the MacLachlan.

Try as I did, she wouldn't check me in here...

Highway sign to another Massachusetts town with a name that's important to pronounce correctly. (The other is named "Athol") A friend once said he thought this one on the sign was the name of a web site for people who aren't very nice...

Although I don't have a lot of photos of Newport, I must say the City is an amazing collection of architecture clustered together like no other in the US.

Back then I didn't wore hats and I never tried it again.
I thought of returning to bows but the shooting range is in the middle of Lisbon and it's too much of a hassle to get there by car and by bus/metro/train.
I quitted the crossbow because of my back and the "loader" (whatever the name of the gizmo is) to pull the string was too much trouble.

Ok failed to photo document this whole event but took this Statesman (which I think is probably made by Akubra) out to the archery range to look for an arrow I lost and too shoot some more.

I ran into this stupid oak branch that was still soaked from last nights rain. It got this black goo and wood debris on my hat in the side dents, both sides, and it knocked it off on the wet muddy ground. I used natures hat brush (a nearby cedar tree) to try to brush it off. I then thought about the possibility of getting cedar oil on my hat and mixing it in the charcoal grunge. Oh well I could always draw on it with charcoal and make it a camo hunting hat or something. Since I discovered this website my thoughts still revolve around hunting but now they include hats, drinking beer, (and thanks to Hurricane Jack) smoking pipes. I got most of the marks off but a couple, however, there was now a slight greenish cast to one of them. The remaining ones looked like they were going to stain the hat. I began reading about hat cleaning and spot removal when I got home. Being an aussie hat I thought it likes water, so I drenched the crown in the shower in cold water and wiped it off with a towel. I set it aside to dry and read some more tips on cleaning. The hat is now dry and everything washed off. No need for buckets of naptha and miracle hat cleaner orders online. It is fine. The end.

Great looking brood. That place is a photographic goldmine!
Thank you sir. I've posted pics before from other parts of this area. There's approximately 500 acres of old ore mining and processing site that ceased production in the 50s and was placed in a public land trust in the 70s as a nature preserve. It is open for public use, and a couple of the southern trailheads are only a couple of minutes worth of drive from my house.

Those are the times when the 2" brims come in so handy....Archery...Movie Cameras, or larger cameras in general...Telescopes...
