One of my grandfathers was a farmer and we've got pictures of him in work shirt and pants with a fedora. He didn't wear suits very often.

I wear fedoras without suits all the time

In fact, usually when I wear a suit I don't wear a hat because my hair is greased. One of my favorite looks is a fedora with a good Hawaiian shirt.

We must remember that the fedora was a hat… and many jobs required a man to wear one. The felt fedora could be seen in many photos from the depression on job sites of construction, road work, and other utilitarian type of jobs. So, it’s no wonder that we see fedoras with other outfits then suits.

In the late 20s to the late 30s, Fedoras were pretty common in all jobs except those that required a uniform. A good pair of dark denim jeans, a dark brown belt that’s tall and a cotton work shirt looks smart with a fedora! Love the 30s work wear! Also, overalls or coveralls look smart as work wear with a fedora. Mostly a good gray tall crown with a black ribbon… other colors are better for casual gab shirts and gabardine trousers… or suits of course.

I’ve seen some wear Fedoras with shorts… I’m not a fan of that look.

Yeah, I'm a fan of the 30-40's work wear with fedora to.

I always like thin, casual sweaters with jeans. No need for a shirt under the sweater, either, if the material isn't itchy. Fedoras look awesome with the pair.

Indeed. I just returned from a couple of weeks in Florence, Italy. Among the many paintings I strolled past was one of the martyrdom of a saint whose name i cannot remember. It dated from 1573, and as usual everyone was depicted in clothing of the day. One of the fellows lighting the fire under the saint was wearing what would easily be called a fedora by today's standards. Fairly crude bash, but no different than anything that might be seen on one of our heads. He was in peasant attire. Of course, no pictures were allowed and I'm not having any luck googling up the painting.

I think the most important thing is just picking the right hat.

I couldn't agree more. This is my approach.

I tend to wear a non-vintage gray Royal Stetson with a black band (which is suprisingly durable and soft for their more modern line). I can wear that with about anything. It also helps that I have a black leather jacket for the fall and a dark gray wool coat for the winter, as well as black shoes all year around. ;)

I just bought a 50's chocolate-ish back-bow stetson fedora, which i wear with a pair of jeans, sneakers, and a tucked in sweater shirt. People say it looks pretty sharp, without being dressy. No pics yet.

i now found another one. this one is from bailey called Felt Hamman Center Crease Stingy Brim Fedora Hat. which one comes closer to the one denzel is wearing. quality better of bailey or golden gate. i never bought a hat so for my first buy i do want to get a right one. sizes also will be tricky, i heard that felt hats and those of golden gate come a little smaller. pls if you have any links for me that would be great. thx

Hello,

That one seems to be a stingy hat with a center crease and the brim snapped up. Plenty of such of those around, both new and vintage. If you like vintage, stingies are usually cheaper.

Here I am wearing a similar one, a vintage Champ Triumph:

Of course this is the only thing I can successsfully compare with Mr. Denzel's looks... ;-)

Regards!

The key is in the thin ribbon, I think.

I always feel that a thin ribbon says 'more casual' and a wide ribbon says 'more formal'.

I think it's more than that, I have a brown fedora that has a very wide band but also a wide (3") brim, and it looks more outdoorsy than dressy.

I'm still anxiously awaiting my campdraft, so I can experiment with a very light hat w/ narrow ribbon.

I strongly disagree. The t-shirt / jeans / fedora look is timeless and appropriately casual.

I don't know... I'm hesitant to wear jeans with most of my hats, it's pretty much limited to my stingy.

I don't know which is worse though, wearing a fedora with sneakers or cowboy boots.

in my opinion, spend $50 and get a pair of all leather skechers and move on.
