You're trying real hard to defend Ms. Snow and that's a magnanimous gesture. I doubt she would return the favor, but that's no matter.
In all honesty the speaker, and her opinions, are irrelevant to the matter I am addressing. Our behaviour has been reprehensible: since when did ad hominem attacks become acceptable here? Since when did we consider it appropriate to make snide comments about a person's sexual peccadilloes as a way to invalidate their opinions? When did we, who claim oh so frequently to be ladies and gentlemen, develop such a terrifying hypocrisy that we use the very tactics we profess to hold in disdain?

There has been a great deal recently of the attitude that things which are Not Like Us are bad and wrong and evil and nasty. A closed-minded, boorish attitude that diminishes us all and reflects badly on the character of every single member of this board.

luvthatlulu said:
Actually, the "lynch mob" minds her smarmy replies to others...not her opinion.
Pay attention.
Would you just care to define 'smarmy' there for me?

My point is this: if I had made such a comment as a member of this board, would I have been subject to similar attacks on my character or would someone have put a stop to it? If the former, then the Lounge has sunk to a depth I did not think it capable of. If the latter, we have sent a message to anyone who reads this thread that we are the very caricature so many of us eschew.

If this was the first thread I saw visiting The Fedora Lounge, I would've left and never thought of it again. Some of this comes close to detached delirium. Yes, 7000 people are on here. Where are the other 1,244,442,601 people using the internet?

This is a microcosm. Enjoy it for what it is, be thankful to MK that you have like-minded people to talk to, and don't lose sight that most people are of neutral or differing opinions being that we are, and always will be, in the minority, and that getting upset about it is weird.

And put bloggers into perspective. Of course the pieces aren't reputable. The internet has given every single person with internet access the ability to write and publish whatever they want, whenever they want, and they do, and that's fine and it makes for a more varied environment. It's not like this was published in GQ Magazine.

Then again, some don't see Coulter's smarmy eye-rolling as anything more than a simple statement of one woman's opinion.

There's also a certain chivalric code that says it's unmanly to defend oneself against attack by a woman. I don't know if that enters into relevance here but it does cross my mind.

As I understand it, ladies and gentlemen may exchange bon mots. But polite people don't try put strangers in their place and sensible people know you can't win an argument. Ladies and gentlemen don't attack one another, either. A man who attacks a woman tends to come of looking worse than a woman who attacks a man; it's easier for a woman to play the sympathy card.

When people have very different tastes and mores, they need more politeness, not less, to make a point. But why anyone would want to try to make a point to a complete stranger who is a "twit," I cannot imagine.

Doc, seriously...

"Smarmy" is in the dictionary.

And, finally, let me just say this: I can't speak for everyone here in the FL so I'll just speak for my actions. I read Ms. Snow's comments when I saw the posting in the Hats forum. I found it amusing at best. I would have left and never returned if that were all there is to it. Then, I scrolled further down and found the responses from several folks either agreeing or disagreeing with her. As I read more and more of her replies, I saw a pattern of "you'll either agree with me or get smacked-down" developing. OK. I still held my fire. I don't recall anyone responding identifying themselves as Lounge members or declaring any connection to it. When I had had enough of her "charm", I replied and I didn't identify myself as a Lounger, either. I also found thru personal experience that she was deleting any comments that she chose; so perhaps someone did identify themselves as a Lounger and take an offensive swipe at her. I'll concede the point that that should not be done. How she came to know of the Fedora Lounge is beyond me, but I know that her left-handed comments about it weren't particularly well-chosen either. So me defend her or hold my fire---no!

And I resent you trying to tell me I should. As long as I don't identify myself as a member or claim any association to the Lounge in my remarks to her, you should mind your own business.

My thoughts, and I hope you'll respect them as I have yours.

As I posted earlier, I just don't care what others think or write about hats being sexy or not. I wear them to keep the weather off and because I like the way they look and for their nifty associations.
Not worth getting upset about, or worth several pages of discussion. Certainly not worth the trouble of going over there and slapping her around. It's a little surprising to learn that folks did that. I'd go look, but I'm at work, and her site runs afoul of the network porn blocker.

Out of curiosity I went to see the comments last night and she seems to have removed pretty much everything but her replies so I guess we'll never know.

And anyway, I'm used to people thinking I'm "cute" wearing hats, never sexy. ;)

Hats are cool. Hats are a statement. Hats are my choice. Do I think I'm sexy? I don't know. I'd like to. BUT...

You know what IS sexy? Curing cancer. Or a devoted teacher. A special holiday with someone you love. A snow storm and a fire. The curve of a woman's back. A piece of literature that gets the blood boiling. You know where I'm going with this.

It's a matter of perspective and relativity. I'm with Scotrace on this one - it's not a battle worth fighting. Not when there are so many SEXY ones out there...

I can accept that. Let's end this here...and all have a Merry Christmas! And that includes Ms. Snow.

It most certainly is. I personally would have used 'condescending,' or perhaps 'patronising,' both of which you might wish to look up, as more characteristic of a superior attitude versus a desire to ingratiate that your use of 'smarmy' implies. If you would like usage examples of either, this paragraph will serve as a fine example - as will your comment above.

Ah, I missed the update memo. Exactly when did two wrongs start making a right?

A little condescending, certainly, but given the tone of response both here and there nobody's got first dibs on the rock-pile. I would imagine that her page is able to track other pages that link to it, and monitor traffic that comes into it along with the page from which it has come. Given that this thread is publicly accessible it is entirely possible that she has read the whole thing.

You are, of course, quite entitled to that opinion, and I shall neither criticise or speak condescendingly to you personally because of it.

But let us leave it here, as you suggest. It seems unlikely that we are going to agree.

Ladies and Gents,

O f'r'eavensake! How many people were seriously upset by this gal or this thread? I read a number of posts that were pretty "blunt" or even downright rude, but I assume that a number of the posts on Ms. Snow's blog were from other folks besides Loungers. Were all of those posts by Loungers?

And where did the lynch mob form? Granted, I got in on this thread late, but I didn't see a post that said, "Hey, let's all go over to this gal's blog and gang up on her!"

Maybe she's actually savvy enough to have chosen a topic that she knows will get her some static from a larger group of people, say 7000 or so of them? And we did find out, didn't we? That's good manipulation of one's target demographic in my book. I'd really laugh if she was secretly a member of this board! It would be grand if she'd seeded this thing...

All in all, I imagine she knows EXACTLY what she's doing in running such a blog - She's hardly a poor, defenseless little maiden! I went and read her profile, and she as much as SAYS she has loads of opinions to push on us! This is like Howard Stern or someone, only less successful and less able to handle the fallout. The fact that she took your posts down and closed the threads means she's either not equal to the role she's taken on, or that's she's done with us and on to her next ambush!

I would have admired it if she'd argued her point of view clearly and objectively, but I doubt she's there to prove her forensic skills, or that she cares about ours. You can't really prove a point like "fedoras aren't sexy", which is why it's a grand blog topic - Opinion sells better than fact! Even the most ignorant person can hold an opinion and argue it forever, but facts need knowledge and can lead to resolution when used properly, which means an end to the controversy, which is bad for ratings. She wanted a fuss, and she got it! She seems pretty vulgar and typical of the 21st century, but no one starts a blog like that without expecting or even inviting this kind of thing. It ups her hits!

So in the end, she helped us out by giving us something to get wound up and let off steam about, we helped her by giving her hits, and then she either got tired or bored with the pounding on her virtual door and moved on. She's probably baiting the ball-cap guys as we speak!

Wasn't there some other thread with a chap busting on hats not long ago? I went to his site and posted a one-liner there, if memory serves, and I think others did, too. They hit us where they know they'll get a groan - We done been had! lol

I chalk this up to a little gutter-rolling, something in which we ALL indulge on occasion, I feel sure. I hope the folks who posted had fun, the ones who were offended were vindicated, and the ones who got on their high horses over it all feel virtuous. And I hope Miss Snow and her bare-headed friends all get everything they want and retire to an island where I'll never hear from them again.

Let he who is without sin throw the first cufflink,

T.

Well, I think that the discussion of are hats sexy is worht a thread if people want to comment. I mean, do we all think we look sexy as hell, or do we just like hats but secretly feel like dorks? Do our wives and girlfriends lov or hate them. Do girls hit on us in bars more or less in hats? Who knows, but fun to discuss.

Or to say, well, she doesn't really understand what a true fedora is and how to wear it, here is a picture of Humphry Bogart looking very sexy, would seem appropriate.

And to say, well I think they are sexy, what the heck does she know, seems appropriate. But any comments on the original blogger beyond that seems to be stooping to a level we do not wish to operate at. But I can understand how people got defensive and lost touch with their better selves for a moment.

So, anyone else have an opinion on if hats are sexy or not. I have definitely known a few guys who looked very sexy in fedoras and the women thought so too. Not sure if I would qualify though. but when I am wearing a sharp suit and walk into a big event or swing dance and I feel eyes on me bacause I am dressed all in white and feeling confidant and good, I feel sexy as heck.

Looking back, I agree that we overreacted a little. It's probably best to ignore such people -- she may be trying to get us riled up on purpose. We complain about her, she wins.

I've been tempted to start a thread called "Fedora Hats are REALLY Sexy"? Then maybe we could discuss that proposition instead of the proper decorum when interacting with those outside our commmunity.

I can't believe that we have been discussing for eleven pages the opinion of one out of the six billion people in the world who happens to not like fedoras! lol

If we are going to talk about one person's opinion, why not (at random) pdxvintagette?

She likes federas. You like fedoras... we could have 11 pages of what is good about fedoras. :)
