My father's birthday is next month and I was considering a hat, go figure.:)
The problem is he has 3 hats, all western, black, and cattlemen crease. I don't want to get something real expensive since I have no idea if he would wear something different or not. Being a size 7 or 56cm I figure it would be easy to find a hat on ebay, but if he didn't like it then he would not be able to exchange it. So all I can think of is something not black and suitable for hot weather. I did see a Stetson open road in straw and thought about a panama, any suggestions?

IC...What about that PB straw Indy?...:D
That may work! I just hate to spend that much if he ends up not liking it though. The open road straw was $50 and his westerns are stetson, but thats still a bit different than a regular western.

Will he wear anything other than a black hat with a Cattleman's crease?

Has he ever admired or shown interest in another style of hat? For instance an Open Road in beige?

Is there a hatter seller near where he lives?

Is he open to other styles?
I would purchase a fedora similar to what he now wears. If he wears black Westerns with a cattleman's crease, I would not shock him with a white straw.

He did make the comment while showing me his Stetson that his next one should be a different color because the black is so hot and very thick. I would do the open road because it is a familiar crease to him and brand but they are pretty expensive.

Has he ever made any favorable comments about your own hats that would give you any hints? Like your newsboys, Akubras, or PB?
He likes Remembrance! I don't think he would wear a newsboy, I would like to get a fedora but it may be too much of a jump.

I'm with those who suggested an open crown Akubra of some sort, perhaps a Federation. Being open crown he - or you - can shape it however he likes. My Fed Dlx currently has that diamond shape in it, which I think gives it a less urban, more rural look, which might appeal to a western hat wearer.

Federations also tend to have slightly larger brims (or at least mine did) so that might suit him better.

Alternatively, there is of course the Fieldmasterm which you already know is a very stiff, western-style felt, and a bigger brim, which again might be preferable to a man who currently has cowboy hats.

An OR is well under $100.00 at the HATCO Outlet in Garland, TX. Just a reminder.

Thing about the PB straw is they'll make it exactly like YOU tell them to make it, and will keep working on it until they make it right for him and his taste. The others, you pay less, but you're stuck with what you pay for. At least the PB straw is a custom and backed by the maker, Joe Peters.

This past summer with it being the hottest on record, I LIVED in my PB straw, and it became a constant companion until the heat wave finally broke. VERY comfortable, and WELL worth the monies in my opinion.

Just a thought.;)

Regards! Michaelson
