FFF, I'm getting anxious, I have two FedIV's coming any day now. One moonstone and a carbon grey. After seeing your bash (it's great) I'm hoping that I can do as well as you have. They will be my first to bashes, so you offer me some hope!

NICE

Great looking rookie bash FFF, looks good on ya'!
I might put the point at which the brim transitions and snaps down a little further back so as to give the brim a tad more "swoop". Personal preference.

:eek:fftopic: Where north of the 49th are you? Mrs. Blaine is an expat Calgarian & I am an unabashed Canuckaphile.

It's all about the "swoop"!!! :D
Hey Rick and GTD, know you were directing towards FFF, but whatcha mean?
Inquiring Goose wants to know :)

Goose I'll get a side shot done up tonight when I'm back home and set it as a profile pic.
...I could stretch them out, but they always seemed to shrink back a little. I think that's why I was willing to try this Fed IV a little large and take my chances with the foam....:)
Oh no, I didn't meant to stretch it. Just to maintain where ya like it. I have only stretched my pilofelt Casual which shrunk like a scene outta Seinfled after it's first rain storm :(

You will LOVE them. I got the moonstone after all the raves about it here. My first was a dark brown. When I first got the moonstone, I was underwhelmed and it felt odd. Think it was because it was the lightest colored lid I had worn in over a decade.

Now I LOVE IT. To the point that I use it as my current avatar. Please post pics when you get your Feds :)

HEY! Wanna see pics of my kids??? Oh. Well, how about my Moonie?

awest84532 - Scour the lounge and read all the post and pics on bashing. Then put a kettle on the stove and start working on it. Steam and work, steam and work. Be patient and as long as you don't but a really hard crease in you can always steam it out easily and start again. I'll be looking forward to seeing your first bash (and remember - you can always keep tweaking it, I know I will be).

Rick - I'm on the Rock, as east as you can get. I'm looking forward to photographing icebergs with an Akubra on :) As for the swoop, I'm still playing with it. I don't like a really strong dip down, but I do like it to be noticeable. Like I said to Goose I'll be taking a side profile shot later tonight and post, hopefully you'll be able to see the swoop then.

Goose - ahh just like a stand to hold the shape, gotcha. Still, the issue I've had with shrinking back is why I've been willing to go with a slightly larger size and padding. Hopefully my Traveller will be waiting for me when I get home and since that's a 59 I'll have a better idea of the right size for me (59 or 60).

And again, thanks to everyone for their kind words and sage advice.

Goose, I think that moonie looks good with the tug-boat bash (I think that's a tug-boat?). These will be my first grays so I am a little apprehensive. I have two Stetson fedoras, one dark brown Temple and one fawn Chatham.

I ordered them on April 9th from HD and were told they were both in stock and would be shipped on the first available date, so I expect them any day.

Tug-boat is a descriptor about the rake of the crease. You can have a diamond or teardrop & have a rake like that profile. You can do both creases & have it be totally flat as well.
I guess I want a tug-boat rake with a teardrop bash!

Alright Goose, side profile shot and a new avatar (one in the same). BTW, this is what happens when a photographer doesn't feel like being in his own pictures.

OK, I'll bite. How did you take that photo?

Isn't it obvious? I have the power of invisibility - I just continue to work because I enjoy what I do :)

Camera on a tripod. Put the hat on a couple of thin stands to hold it in position. Adjust lights and take a picture. Lock the focus on the lens, remove the hat and the stands holding it up and take another shot.

Load the two images in Photoshop and place the image with the hat and stand on top of the image of just the background as layers. Create a layer mask and remove the stands holding the hat up to expose the image below - the one of just the background.

I'm afraid though I'm going to have to kill you now that you know my secret ;)

Scotty - I've got shots of the front and top at the beginning of the thread, and this one covers the side. If those aren't doing it for you let me know what angle you want to see and I'll see if I can't get it posted for you.

Thanks! I was thinking of the cloning tool in Photoshop, but I was wondering if you did it without software.

I told you - I have invisibility :)

Well I was thinking about doing it with fishing line (I've done shots like that before) but in the end it was easier to use a mask. Clone tool is great, but if you can get a clean background shot using layers and masks is the way to go.

Hope the other pictures gave you what you needed on the bash. I'm pretty happy with it for a first time bash.

Okay, thanks, Triple-F, I thought they were different bashes.

Nice Fed 3F! I admire your Photoshop prowess, I would have just cloned out the stands and tried to clean up around the bottom of the hat. But your photo is spectacular. Great lighting and it appears to be a pretty nice lens to boot.
