My love for Maltese Falcon and Casablanca know no bounds, but I can't otherwise narrow it down to a list. Even just listing the 1940s movies I own on DVD will take too long.

Has anyone mentioned Detour yet?

My pick would be "The Major & The Minor" Ginger Rogers is wonderful in this one. My second pick would be "Doña Barbara" its a mexican film but its one of Maria Felix greatest performances.

I've forgotten The Grapes of Wrath. I have seen it last week for the first time, but it is still something I am thinking about. Great thing with good old Fonda. But I am not sure, was it made in the 40s or in the 30s?

Though it was filmed from Oct-Nov 1939. Just managing to get some of that 1939 magic! No wonder 1940 is probably the second-greatest year in Hollywood movie history!

I recently saw 'For Me and My Gal' which was just excellent.
And another of my favourites is 'Bringing up Baby' which i'm surprised nobody's mentioned this one, as it's soo funny lol, it features Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant (a great combination) and much more entertaining, I think, than the philedelphia story, though that is a pretty good movie as well.

Everyone has mentioned "Laura", but let's not forget Preminger's other great Dana Andrews movie "Fallen Angel" which came out in 1945.

Another great Gene Tierney film was "Leave Her To Heaven" (1945).
She was an eeevil lady in that one, and after the drowning scene you HATED her!

Oh! :eusa_doh: Woops! How embarassing. I imagine that is why it wasn't mentioned then just assumed that it was early 40s, I guess I ought to check next time particularly as I haven't watched it in while.
