The original "Black Christmas" with John Saxon was campy fun with a few scary moments. The re-make was not so good though...

I mentioned this in another thread, but I really took to '30 Days of Night'. Its almost a study of atmosphere, because there is really no plot to speak of. There is no explanation as to the vampires, or who they are, and that was interesting. They were just there to gorge.

It wasnt great, but different.

It was interesting as it infered some things without direct connections being explained. Th eoverhead shots of the town during the big vampire raid were chilling. (I mentioned they made me think of the news helicopter shots during some of the LA Riots.)

The vampires are like some tribal band with Eastern European origins. The starkness of their black themed costuming. The fact that they feared nothing in that artic winter night. It oozed the fear that comes from such isolation.
Also the scene where they the good guys need to hide and the father is a little bit senile so you worry about him giving your hide away. That was tense.

How did the guy, the renfield type character get hooked up with them?

Rob Zombie's BEST movie. LOVE it. Not gore porn, like Saw, but a great mix of story, chaos, and a 70s porn vibe. So good.

"Untraceable" is a new release on DVD. I watched it tonight. It has a lot of "SAW" type moments but a pretty good story, too. Check it out, Doran!

I've seen Devil's Rejects. Or at least most of it. I wasn't sure what to think .... cinematography was curious with the switching of film stocks all the time ... there is a "CSI" type show in Poland that does that too ... loved the college boys who think the "rednecks" are all kitsch and laugh at them and then get theirs ...

I'll look for "Untraceable" but that's not the French one in which a pregnant woman gets terrorized is it? I cannot hang with anything bad happening to babies, very innocent young children or especially pregnant women. That's my one squeam-boundary.

I kind of liked The Cell despite Jennifer Lopez's "acting" ("Johnny! You PROMISED!") for its incredible imagery. Some of which was wonderfully unpleasant. More fantastical imagery in horror films is a desideratum. (Hence Dario Argento....)

(Not to get too sickening, but I am still waiting for a movie that realizes the weird curse/blessing in the Old Testament that "He shall make your enemy into your footstool." Now THAT would be truly grotesque. I would like to see it.)

No its the USA movie starring Diane Lane...I think you might enjoy it.
I'm not the type to recommend the "bad things happening to babies" movies!

depends. i find most horror films to be a laugh riot- i'd say my favorite films in terms of merit would be Gates of Hell (the lucio fulci film)and Demons 1 and 2 (dario Argento)

Let's not forget the great Cannibal films like Eaten Alive, Jungle holocaust, and Zombie holocaust though.

As far as mainstream i'd say The Thing is an amazing horror/sci fi film (a bit of both). I've got a huge movie collection and i'm sure i'm missing something.

This movie is so 70s and not at all 'scary' by today's standards but it gives me the chills everytime I see it. No gore.. just creepy..

My wife is in love with what's his name (Donald Sutherland).

That midget in the end in the red cape who the husband thought all throughout the film was his child's ghost ... truly truly creepy.

The wonderful love scene between the husband and wife (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christy was it?) -- just brilliant with all the jump cuts or whatever that editing term is. Just brilliant.

It's a beautiful scene. It is erotic without being pornographic in any shameful or ugly or degrading way.

It's worth seeing the movie again just for that -- although the film is so good that there are plenty of other reasons to see it too. Quite artful.

That midget was the ugliest mofo in film history.
