Hemingway: I'm a Native American Dancer (Jingle Dress actually) and my dance fan is made from the tail feathers of a Red Tail Hawk. It was a beautiful bird that was a rescue who died in captivity. The entire bird was gifted to us by dear friends who are no longer with us. We used every part of that hawk for my and my husband's outfits. I feel so honored every time I dance to have that bird with me. They are just such majestic and intelligent creatures. I draw so much strength from that when I dance and I never forget to offer up a prayer to that hawk and to the memory of the people who gave him to me.

My favorite animal however is of course my namesake :) Nashoba is the Choctaw word for Wolf, and they are by far my favorite. I've always had a special connection with the wolf too deep and complex to explain.
How wonderful, and what an amazing tradition. Thank you for sharing that with me. It gives me even more respect for Big Eric and his kind. :)

K.D. mentioned a good one

There is an animal I've loved for a long time and surprised no-one has mentioned it. Its habitat stretched onto every continent except Antartica at one point but now they are fairly scarce.
That animal is

I worked for the NYC parks Dept many years ago, and got quite attached to the gorillas. They'e wonderful critters.
Hemingway: You need to get one of those falconry gloves, and see if you can coax your hawk friend onto your hand. Those pix are so utterly and completely cool. I can see the famous red tailed hawk Pale Male circling over Central Park from my office window on occasion. They're magnificent animals.

There is a Native American teaching called "Animal Speak" to sum up in a few words is that animals come in to your life to tell you something that you need to learn most at that time in your life.

If you are interested, I highly recommend "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews.

Animals that have always been connected to me are White Owls and Hawks.
I wouldn't call them a fierce wild animal but, butterflies have a special spot in my life too.

An old South Texas specimen of my serpentine namesake. Just wants to be left alone to mind its own business, but if you bring trouble to it...

If the options are expanded to include extinct, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one of these either, but the answer becomes Tyrannosaurus rex. There's just something about how that big beast could have projected raw power...

As a wildlife biologist I have a fondness for all wild creatures, but I have to say that my overall favorite is the lizard. Whether it be gecko, skink, anole, monitor, or some other type, I love lizards. In fact, most of my home is decorated with lizard motifs.
