Currently, DC Comics is reprinting all the Spirit strips in hardcover format, with each volume covering roughly six months. They are a bit pricey ($50 bucks a pop; 16 volumes so far). However, last month, they released a trade edition - The Best of the Spirit ($15). Should be at most comic stores and many book stores stock it as well; highly recommended. I wish I could say which story is the best, but it is next to impossible - there isn't a clunker in the bunch.

The neatest collectible was a few years back. There was an action figure (nicely rendered); better yet was that it came with a set of letters that you could create the original diorama effect with.

of Cole and Eisner

Jack Cole's Plastic Man is indeed great. I don't think anyone else has captured his character like him. A lot of followers seem to do more of a Tex Avery style of character and story. A book I recommend is:

I own it and it is great.

Eisner's work is beautiful. Not just his rendering but the cinematic angles he used. Ebony is tough to look at sometimes though.
Another old time artist who's work is beautiful:Windsor McKay. The draughtmanship of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" is enough to love it. The whimsey is a bonus.

Also has anyone heard of the elseworlds series of comic books by DC? They take DC characters and place them in alternative timelines and eras. Gotham by Gaslight is a great one. . .

Are you talking about building a drivable model. That would be so cool to see. You would have to wear the 1940's style costume when you drove it. I would love to see that done.

Yes, an actual, honest-to-god car that looks like the golden age batmobile. I grew up around guys that build lowriders and customize autos, so once I hit the lotto, I'm getting down to business. Does anyone have suggestion on a stock car to build off of?

You will definetly have to post pictures. You could even do a small independent film with you as the Batman. You could really give it a Golden era feel. That would be great. If you need a Gray Ghost for an episode, I may be able to help out. Mycroft would probably love to get into the act.:cheers1:

Here's a news photograph from the 40s of the real Batman and Robin standing next to a car and pretending it is the Batmobile:

Here is the 1943 Batmobile (from the serial)

And here is the 1949 Batmobile (from the serial "Batman and Robin")

That's a 1949 Mercury convertible, and the earlier madel is a 1939 Cadillac series 61 convertible.

Now get a mask like this:

and Batman will live!!

I love the Saint. :cheers1: Man, he is one cool and smooth dude.

Mister Templar was another major childhood influence. Between that and 20s-30s jazz, my fate was sealed from about the age of eight.

I have the 1943 serial of Batman on DVD. I found it at the Great Smoky Mount Knife Works in Sevierville, TN. I just love the old serials. I also have one of the early Green Hornet serials that I bought at the same place. Just can't beat the old serials.
