How do you feel about items that are 80's does 40's or 70's does 50's.

I am trying to sell a couple of dresses on eBay that are lovely but just do not suit me (am not posting auctions, I'm a good girl) and want to know if the reason they are getting no bids is that they are repro...

Ha! I just said in another thread that I love that about the 80's. I have no problem whatsoever with repro stuff and sometimes I even prefer it as long as it looks right.

I would buy an 80s dress that truly looked 50s. The problem with a lot of them is that they're still kind of dated and have aspects of them that look like the time period they're from - usually the fabric or some slight alteration in the cut. If they're nice, no problem, but a lot of times they sort of look a little cheesy.

I do prefer it sometimes too, as its usually washable - a big bonus. 80's stuff over here is uber expensive - its massively fashionable at the moment. its actually cheaper to get 50's if you can find a shop that even bothers to stock it. My vintage clothes shop boys say they usually don't take the 40's/50's stuff as noone wants it. I'm going to have to chat them up and give them my measurements...

I'd like to see pics of some of your 70's 80's repros. Here are mine:

I have a really realistic looking burgundy frock, sexy yellow dress and crazy flame patterned peplum dress. I'd post them but they are huge and I've taken up enough bandwidth tonight.

It's hard to find the 80s repro that doesn't look dated, indeed. Usually the cut is divine but in a horrid pastel geometric mess print :rage:

I LOVE 70s does 40s though. I have several wonderful pieces like that.

You're not going to get prices for the 70s stuff like the 40s stuff, unless you have a really special item. But, price it at a start you can live with and then hope for a bite!

the prices in shops here for 70's and 80's are currently higher than 40's, 50's

at least in your average vintage shop!

here is my "i almost think it is 40's" dress

I just took this picture 30 seconds ago so I'm in bare feet and have the same hair as "what I'm wearing today" which is not 40's at all...also I have a t-shirt on under the dress. I guess that's a fashion no-no.

BUT I picked this dress up in the last couple days for like...5 dollars or some ridiculous price and I think the dress is cute...the picture is obviously lame but we don't care, right? Right!

Nice.

There are only certain people who can pull off a flaming bustle and if you're one then you damn well better show it off.

Your bustle's on fire!

I like it, I often wear modern things and the right accessories can pull it off.
Yes, that burgundy dress has the 80's hallmark, the elastic gathered waist.

Cute dress! Does look 80s to me though, probably because of the way the skirt hangs and the shape of the collar. Also, the elastic waist gives it away.

thats what I thought, but with a belt its OK. Not bad for 10 pounds!

its funny, so many people see the 80's as being just neon socks, permed hair and all the other tacky stuff. its nice to see that some good things came out of it too, even if they do hark back in time!

I purchased this jacket in the very early nineties for £2.50. I'm assuming it's eighties as the charity shops then were awash with dirt cheap eighties clothing, but the cut looks very 1940's to me. Most if not all of the 1940's coats I've seen at events are of the same cut. Do you think it's authentic enough to wear to '40's do's? I'm fed up of freezing in colder months in just a shawl!

Oh and please ignore the curtains that have been hoisted up on the chair, we have a house bunny who likes to play behind the curtains and nibble lol

I hope this question isn't too "intimate" Smuterella, but are you wearing a bullet bra in this pic? Is it vintage or repro? Where did you buy it? I love that silouette!
