Mitchum was one of my favorites. As far as I'm concerned he was the king of film noir....and he could wear a hat well.

I bet I could convert one of my ORs and come close to that hat. I have a wide Burgandy ribbon as shown in the photo that Ted posted. It would be a pretty easy conversion.

Something like this....

It's a great movie. I wish more people knew about it. That was one of the first hats to trigger my interest when I first saw it 30 years ago. Server's biog is decent but Mitchum's life, despite his wide range of adventures, seemed empty to me and the story was basically a sad one.

Rick Blaine,(nice conversion btw), Tedquinton, Ole, Thanks guys. Ole's correct. It's an 1 5/8. I like that width and the Burgandy goes good with that color. The ribbon's just wide enough to get real close to the effect you want, but not too wide that it over powers and detracts from the crown.

Ole, You would definitely come out with something fantastic. Love the hat in your avatar pic.

Farewell My Lovely is certainly on my short list of favorite films. I was already into things vintage by the time it came out when I was in high school. It was the first film that I actually paid to see a second time in the theater as a first run film.

I understand that disputes over the rights/royalties in the U.S. are the reason for it's not being available here on DVD. I blinked and missed the oh so brief U.S. release/availability of the DVD.

Hey Doctor Damage, is your DVD a wide screen version or just a pan & scan 4:3 (classic TV) format version. I've seen some purchasers comments over the years complaining (rightly so) about obtaining the pan & scan version of the film on DVD.

It had been used previosly by Victor Mature in "Kiss of Death" and Mitchum wasn't exactly thrilled to wearing "Victure Mature's old farted-up suit." But he did and it looked great. Excellent movie as well.

Mitchum was surprisingly sensitive about how he was perceived by the public. For example, he always claimed to have hated "The Night of the Hunter" (an amazing film), because he was embarrassed by the poor initial reaction it had from critics.

Oh, and he wore a damned good hat in that too ;)

Hi

Forgot to post my 'Farewell My Lovely' inspired hat, produced by Mike Miller of Northwest Hats, in this thread. This hat was not supposed to be a faithful replica, but instead a hat built to suit me but taking elements from the screen hat.

Here it is:

There are more pictures in the Northwest Hat thread for anyone interested.

Best wishes

So I have a length of perfectly colored burgundy ribbon in hand, thanks to Brent @deadlyhandsome.

What I have done is pull out as many of my gray hats as I could find, and a couple of not-quite-grays, as well, that I think this ribbon will look good on. Not all these hats are contenders, due to vintageness and, even more so, rarity.

The photos posted in this thread were taken in my kitchen, under a combination of sunlight, and incandescent and fluorescent lighting. The colors are not exact but it's the best I can do right now. To get more accurate shots, maybe next weekend I'll do this again outside, weather permitting.

The first two hats are the most likely candidates: the carbon gray Fed IV and the medium/light gray Royal Stetson that I call 'Roach.' I think the ribbon looks best on these two, with the added bonus that the Fed IV is not vintage, and the Roach was a mess and incomplete when I got it, and although refurbished, has not been restored to original.

Some other hats that the ribbon looks good on, but are not as likely to be molested - Adventurebilt Seaplane Gray and Dobbs Hanover Square:

Two hats that are not gray - A Royal Stetson that's a nice light brown, and a VS that I don't know the color of. It's sort of a cross between sand, clay, and I don't know what, but it's probably the closest hat I have to the warm gray hat that Mitchum wore in the movie.

I wrapped the ribbon around a couple of other gray hats, but they're not at all relevant to this project due mainly to rarity, and dimensions of the hats, that were made for fat ribbons, iow, more than the more common 1.5" that most of these hats have, and that the burgundy ribbon matches.

So, opinions? I am not sure which hat would look best with this conversion, or any at all.
