Farewell: Last of the First (Stetson haters take note)

Well, I just did my Fall Hat Clean-out (a little early this year because of Art Fawcett's and Analogist's charitable trade-in idea). I am thinning the herd, and have finally decided to part with the hat I have left from my first year as a Fedora Lounge Member.

That's right! All my "First Hats" are gone. And the last one out is a modern Stetson! A Downs, to be exact, the discontinued Bark color (that's pecan to the custom hat crowd).

The history; I bought this Downs off of ebay when I thought that Stetson was "It." It was second hand, and never looked quite right on me because the brim and crown were so small. But I kept it as a beater. The previous owner had left the brim snapped down for a year, and rather lopsidedly, too. It was my first cool water reshape, and it didn't come out too bad, considering. I have worn it in heat, sun, rain, and snow. I've steamed, it dropped it, kicked it, stamped on it, punched it, and crushed it.

Anyone who thinks a modern Stetson can't take abuse... check this out. This is what it looks like today, without having ever been cleaned, reblocked, or even reshaped since I worked on it some 5 years ago. My most abused hat ever!

And for further viewing, the album that includes numerous pics, taken at different times.

Farewell, my old friend. You treated me far better than I ever treated you! I hope the next wearer turns out to be a nice, relaxing retirement. lol

I have struggled with that very question for years. lol In the end, I decided that it was time to move on. I get rid of several hats a year; the ones I've grown out of (physically or mentally), the ones that never get worn, that don't look right, and the beaters that will most likely be destroyed by my carelessness unless I pass them along to somebody who likes them better than I.

This one has dodged the bullet long enough. I have a bad feeling, as sound as it is, that if I keep it, this year will bring it's ultimate ruin. When I ignore my gut, it's never pretty. :eusa_doh:

Now... where did I put my gray Temple? lol

I understand, NB. I'm in the same boat. About 30 hats I wouldn't mind unloading - most from before I knew better. :D

Plain water on a wash cloth dabbed onto that ribbon all around should spruce it up a little for sale time.

So.. how does it feel to be into your next phase of hat collecting? :) I assume your taste in hat styles have changed?
This is probably something most of us can identify with.

I'm actually quite content. Or maybe I should say happy. I'm actually entering my third and fourth stages now, simultaneously. lol

I have to fight off the occasional itch to buy something I shouldn't (like another Stetson), but, I was lucky enough to find my Stage 2 bliss quickly. I built a great felt hat collection that's mostly custom and vintage (thanks mainly to JohnnyPhi and a certain Mr. Fawcett). The Downs was my last holdover from my learning phase.

Stage 3 for me, being so happy with my felts, is now focused on building the right straw collection. I'm not having the same kind of luck as I did with the felts. :(

Stage 4 is my "bold experiment" stage. I'm trying to branch out and try new things - unusual designs, hatters I haven't tried, etc. Stretching the legs. I already got daring with last winter's Chocolate Mint VS, and tried a Penman. This season... well, watch the boards. :D

Does that mean you're selling a gray Temple, or graduating to one?

As a joke, it meant graduating. In reality... still deciding. Why, you want it? ;)

If it's a 7 3/8, we can certainly talk about it. ;)
