Family heirloom cufflinks

My mom gave these to me yesterday. They had belonged to her father.

One end screws off, so that you can get them on the shirt. There are no markings on them, and they are remarkably heavy.

I've managed to get them on by bracing one end against my leg, and screwing the end with my free hand. They're kind of awkward that way, but they have such a heft to them that they keep the shirt in the right place.

I hunt for civil war artifacts and have found some old cuff links. I have been able to date (and gain other info) from using the internet. There are groups who collect them. I hope you find the history, it may be very interesting.

Semi-OT, but is it considered a fashion faux-pas to have one's shirt cuffs large enough so that one's hands fit through when they're closed with buttons or links? It sure does make it more convenient.
