I was on this site Facebook for about 1 week and now regret it.

Why do you regret it? Everything you post online carries with it a risk. FB is trying to protect itself, not steal your stuff. You post things here and it carries with it risks. It is up to all of us to act responsibly with postings, and to measure if the benefit outweighs the risks. That is true of FB or using a cell phone or posting a notice on the bulletin board at work. FB is a fun way to communicate with people I haven't spoken with in 20 years. We all seem to have an expectation of privacy that is simply not - and never has been - there.

This is not so much a question of privacy as it is a matter of who owns your content. Here's a recent posting from Dave Farber's excellent list.

--

"CU's Consumerist has a post on a change in Facebook’s Terms of
Service agreement that became effective on 4 February: Facebook’s
New Terms Of Service: “We Can Do Anything We Want With Your
Content. Forever.” [1]

Both the new Facebook TOS [2] and the previous one [3] made these
aggressive claims on your content.

“You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual,
non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide
license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy,
publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display,
transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate,
excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or
in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion
thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a
user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your
website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any
purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a)
and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the
promotion thereof.”

That was bad enough, but at least Facebook relinquished those
rights on your content if you dropped out. But no longer. The
following clause from the old TOS has been dropped.

“You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If
you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted
above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that
the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content.”

Just to make it absolutely clear how screwed you are, the new TOS
also adds the following.

“The following sections will survive any termination of your use
of the Facebook Service: Prohibited Conduct, User Content, Your
Privacy Practices, Gift Credits, Ownership; Proprietary Rights,
Licenses, Submissions, User Disputes; Complaints, Indemnity, General
Disclaimers, Limitation on Liability, Termination and Changes to
the Facebook Service, Arbitration, Governing Law; Venue and
Jurisdiction and Other.”
By the way, if you’ve used Facebook in any way since 4 February,
you have already accepted the new TOS.

“We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to change or
delete portions of these Terms at any time without further
notice. Your continued use of the Facebook Service after any
such changes constitutes your acceptance of the new Terms.”

And if you want to take them to court, Fugetaboutit.

“Except as set forth in the paragraph below, you agree that all
claims and disputes between you and Facebook that arise out of
or relate in any way to the Terms or your use of the Facebook
Service will be resolved either by (a) binding arbitration by
a single arbitrator in Santa Clara County, California or (b)
binding non-appearance based arbitration conducted by
telephone, online or based solely on written submission.”

All your base are belong to Facebook.

No way in hell would I ever sign up for a website with those terms.

Well said, Warbaby, I'm with you in spades.

I'm not dissing any one on it, but essentially:

Facebook can use any content that you post to make money, however they see fit, they are not obligated to give you credit or remunerate you.

Facebook may alter any content you post in any way they see fit.

Facebook can use your name, picture and essentially your identity for its own purposes, with virtually obligation no to you.

Just logged on to FB n this was at the top of the news feed:

"Over the past few days, we have received a lot of feedback about the new terms we posted two weeks ago. Because of this response, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised. For more information, visit the Facebook Blog.

If you want to share your thoughts on what should be in the new terms, check out our group Facebook Bill of Rights and Responsibilities."

Yes I agree, didn't sit too well with me that. That would have severely limited how much I used the site. Glad they saw sense.

I use facebook a lot. I never used Myspace as I only intended to use FB to keep in touch with old or distant friends. I think it's safe as only as much information as you put up is visible to others. My name is no secret, my home town isn't, my email isn't as it gives nothing away, my school isn't as anyone I pass on the street could see that anyway. What else is there which is secret? Details of my personal life which my friends can see aren't a risk to me, as they won't help them access me or my bank details. I make it a point only to post what I don't mind people knowing.

As for adding me, I do add people I don't know personally on occaision, such as people I met through friends. I will continue doing this as I have gained very interesting friends from this. As for loungers I am fine to add anyone who is actually going to do more than just add me for the sake of adding a lounger, as that seems pointless to me. If say you are interested in communicating with me for whatever reason (because you find my posts stupid for example) then I will accept. Just say you're from TFL.

Use my email to find me as it's easier since it only returns one result:

I have been eaten alive by FB!

Especially since getting my IPhone so I can go on it anytime, anywhere... dangerous!

I love it. It's great for keeping up with old and new friends. It's simple and editable, so you can create your own friend groups and only look at one group if you like (useful for separating the different parts of your life).

You can use it to promote events, stuff for sale (love the automatic Etsy listing posting!), political discussions and movements, whatever...

One of my friends started the "Spontaneous Smiley" which went viral and she is getting national recognition. All you need is a cute gimmick.

I really don't care about them having the right to use my picture or verbiage. I am not posting my music there, so anything they use me for is just publicity for me. If I really thought the privacy was an issue I wouldn't even have a computer.

On the other hand, Myspace made it so hard for me to get back in when I lost my password 6 months ago, that I haven't touched it since.

I am on the FL group on Facebook (just joined), so friend me please!
I use my whole name.
