Worst thing is the guy is a rock, early 70s but looks like he is in his late 50s, farmed all his life, will work all day and night during harvest season like it was nothing, literally a force of nature...

I had a grandfather who was never sick, cleaned the house everyday, fixed things up, ironing all clothes, cutting grass with hand scissors, never complain about backpain or anything , but once he got something, it was heart attack, and then lung cancer.

Oh, I wasn't implying you're wrong, just that I read a lot about how antibiotics in general aren't a good idea if you have Corona. Scientists were making sure to warn everyone about it after Trump proclaimed to have discovered the cure.
Don't know myself but the way I see it, if anyone already ill gets infected, I'd imagine they ought to have been on antibiotics to begin with. I guess it's good to treat secondary infections and that will definitely lessen the strain the body puts into battling the virus but on their own, not sure how effective the treatment would be.

Not sure if there's a whole lot you can do, anyway. Masks are pretty useless too... Luckily, the virus is mostly only in the lungs so if nobody sneezes on you, you should be fine.

yea I agree antibiotics usually prescribed for secondary bacterial infection if your cold gets longer and mucus starts changing color, virus itself it just depending on basically your own body killing the infected cells replacing with new ones from what I remember from highschool biology class level knowledge

by Resident Evil knowledge you can heal virus infection from zombie bites by chewing potted green plants you casually find in your garden or around police station

Very cool. I've been listung after some seriously dieselpunk leather masksand half masks on Etsy.... As I've said before on TFL, noticing how much cleaner the air is here in ventral London with a 90% cut in traffic, I'll be wearing a mask a lot more when things return to "normal".

It's probably a good thing I don't presently have the cash for that Plague Doctor outfit I want, otherwsie I'd dobutless end up getting arrested for walking the Streets of Whitechapel freaking people out!

The research I've read actually stated that even a cloth bandana can cut the risk of breathing in Covid-19 particles by 50%... 80% for an N95, 100% for a full-on 'gasmask' level respirator. Ntohing is fully certain ,but anything that cuts the risk has to be good.

Also realised out with the dog today that my hayfever symptoms lessened a bit after I did the morning walkies with a mask on, even just round our own grounds. TBH, my favourtie bit of it is the aesthetic...

People are not well-suited to staying inside for weeks on end. In China, you can have a large-scale lockdown as the culture and political environment are rather different to many other places (this isn't an approval or a condemnation, it's just an observation) with much greater compliance. In the UK, we still have people going sunbathing or picnicking in groups and even MPs getting caught visiting second homes. There's a trench mentality: it won't happen to me/ But of course Terry's fine; I can talk to him/ I read there's a vaccine so it's ok / China's lockdown is over, so ours must be over soon / I read a theory that it only affects the very obese, etc.

I've been saying from the off there's a much bigger danger in a culture like ours which veers more in the direction of the cult of the individual. I'm all for rights, but only when reasonably combined with basic social responisibilities towards one's fellow bipeds...

It never ceases to amaze me that people who can be so cynical about official or expert advice of any sort are so utterly credulous towards any old rubbish their mate down the pub or someguy on the internet said! Truly, this is the age of the Orc...

I was furiouswith my parents for flying back from their place in Spain rather than"risking" staying there for the duration. They jumped on an easyjet rescue flight and breathed everyone else's recycled air for three hours - they're damn lucky they didn't come home with a dose of it.

I think that for a lot of people, fatalism takes hold after about three weeks and they start taking risks. The essential information has been about for a fair while now, and, if people follow it, they should be fine. My oldies won't be going out for 10 days until after lockdown is over and all fatality and infection figures are at approaching nil- I remain unconvinced that there is enough information on what constitutes comorbid/underlying conditions that I'm confident that I fully understand so we aren't risking a late infection here.

Plus I can wear jackets around the house.

I'm with you. My other half has acompromised immune system because of a medical condition and has just this morning receivedher *fifth* letter from the health service telling her not to go outside. She's afraid even to go out to the garden with the dog at the minute. We've been on lockdown ourselvessince 13th March. TBH, I'd be rather enjoying it all told if it wasn't for the fsct I'm so damn busy work-wise(!), but that said, I really do feel for my chums in the performance industries who are feeling the pinch as a result of all their work disappearing.

I have some French extended family (my cousin's husband) that were just like that when all this chaos started.
When the government started telling people to stop shaking hands and stay at home they laughed and made fun.
They organized a friend/family dinner two weeks into isolation, 15 people were invited, a couple were infected but unaware of it.
The week after that dinner 11 people out of the 15 that attended the party tested positive to Covid-19.
Fortunately most of them are ok as they are young, but my cousin's husband's parents are in their 70s and have been hit really hard. They spent two weeks at home in self isolation with syndromes before things went really bad and they had to be picked up by ambulance and taken to intensive care.

It has been super traumatic for all of them, when the ambulance came to pick them up it was apparently straight out of a Sci-fi movie, full space suit from head to toe, they had to strip down to their underpants in the streets, no one could come with them, they couldn't bring anything, it was straight out of 12 monkeys.

They have now been in IC in a Paris hospital for close to 2 weeks and their condition is not improving, it's actually getting worst, the dad now also caught pneumonia and phlebitis in hospital, they are not sure he is going to make it.
There is no communication allowed between them and their families, all they get is an update call every couple days...
If he passes away there will be no ceremony, they will just get an urn with the ashes and that's it.

This is no joke people...

Sorry to hear this - I hope things improve. It's been quite horrific to see the steady death toll, especially when they put individuals faces to the numbers - this morning, I saw a piece about a nurse of 29 in full health dying; last week in London two kids, one 16, one 19 in perfect health otherwise were killed. I doubt there's anyone now who *isn't* vulnerable to some scary extent.

Some cultures are coincidentally better-prepared for certain kinds of threats. Hong Kong did an incredible job, as did South Korea (and Taiwan beat everyone), and it looks as if China's policies have worked - although it is so vast it is hard for anyone (them included) to say (it's much easier to talk about responses on a provincial level- Shanghai has done well, for example, but figures from places like Anhui may be wildly varied).

There's also the prospect of a second phase which - certainly as far as the UK, US, France Spain and Italy are concerned - must be better managed. I don't think it's an exaggeration to imagine that one or more of those places could reach a tipping point very quickly if similar figures arise.

We locked down here as soon as I heard about it being in the UK- kid straight out of school, folks (who we're with till August) not going out and facemasks ordered. I'm sure that they initially thought I'd lost my marbles and there was a fair amount of persuasion-by-volume, but I've seen SARS and H1N1 in China; when the Party doesn't talk about it and then lock a city, you want to be digging a trench with a spoon if you have to.

I dont think i can adapt to wear mask as part of going out outfit later beyond corona, my glasses fogging, my ears hurt, half my face wet from condensed breath.
Here government has ordered to close routes and limiting acesses through neighborhood areas by closing portals , i see tendencies of government closing things up as solution, im afraid if situation gets critical or hospital cant no longer cope with new cases then they would act like at the time of black death pandemic, by padlocking houses with infected people in, as per yesterday i cant imagine how many people are on the road, restaurant are reopen and quite busy, im afraid by coming weeks new cases will flares up dramatically here

The masks are really not very comfortable. However, it does beat the alternative.

but wearing mask really does its function for me
1. stop me from touching my mouth with my hand when calculating price : weight between items in supermarket
2. make me want to go home fast to wash hand and get the mask off my face

There is a kid in my area making 3D printed "ear relief" for mask wearers. Basically it is a clip which attaches to the ear-loops and clips them together in the back of your head.

I just bought a respirator. It works the same as N95 Mask with better breathing ability. Simply no masks available in my area.

that's the only thing available here too and even when the price is already double or triple still not 10x over like disposable n95 ones, if I'm going to replace the activated carbon filter, I see some activated carbon products that are safe
-pills for diarrhea or food poisoning in the form of tablets
-fridge deodorizer refill pack, in the form of sealed paper/ nonwoven fabrics pack
so probably the fridge deodorizer is a better option it can be stuffed closely following the shape of the cartridge
since the replacement cartridge is not easy to come by while fridge deodorizer is locally and easily available.
now just need to DIY a fabric cover to hide this unfriendly look

I've not put on a mask as yet, nor do I have one. I'm sure they offer some modest protection but I'm happy enough staying 6 to 10 feet away from people and colleagues.

Here in the US in some states it's now mandatory to wear a mask if you're going to the store, riding public transit, or working around other people. At work here in NJ we're required to wear some kind of face covering by law now. Some people are wearing bandanas, others have disposable surgical masks (the main place to get these for now is convenience stores where they charge $2/each) and a couple have made their own masks. I'm working with a couple suppliers to get a bunch of masks made to sell where I work as I figure there will be significant demand for at least a short while.

here is already mandatory for about a week now, previously I don't have any masks, my mother made me a diy cotton mask, so I wear that couple of time for weekly grocery shopping, but for longer use I always have fog on my glasses need to touch my face to clean my glasses, a lot of the popular mask worn by most people are now from wet suit material neoprene spongy fabric thing, I don't think it will filter anything since originally used by women to block UV and dust on their dolled up face, or by celebrity to hide their popular face, so it's not even designed to seal tightly .

I'm wearing glasses all day so if something more bothersome should be hanging on my head it better be useful

I bought it around 2 months ago for 30 dollar. You don't need to replace anything I think. The replacement is for someone breathing a lot in construction place with a bunch of oil and gas. And it was originally made for last one month or 70 hours breathing. In this condition, I won't go outside that often.
