Experts : Can you give me some insight on these vintage Mallory's?

This is my first official post here at the Lounge. I'd like to thank Zohar for the invite and MK for the admittance. I was recently told about the new magazine to which I wish the best of luck. I imagine this board had alot of influence.

Some of you may know me from COW as I'm mostly a Raiders fan but I've always had an admiration for vintage styles such as the ones alot of you here persue in your daily lives. Perhaps that has alot to do with the fact that my Grandparents have been deadly serious antique collectors my entire life. Because of them I've been collecting fedoras since I was about 16, although not part of my daily choice of dress, I was never afraid to wear my fedoras with pride even though I knew most people my age shuned away from wearing them. Still, I got alot of compliments because it always makes you 'POP" when you have a nice fedora on your head. To this day I still get compliments when I wear my fedoras because people seem to recognize quality (Optimo) when they see it.

So I was looking through some old boxes in my closet and pulled out two vintage hats that I assume were given to me by my Grandmother some time ago. Neither were my size so I'm sure that's why they went directly into the closet. I saw Zohar online and knew he has alot more knowledge of vintage hats and got some info on them based on what he had to say after seeing pics of them. Both are Mallory hats, one a little older than the other but both are in excellent to almost mint condition. Here's the pics.

This hat is really, really nice and I wish it was in my size. The felt is really sweet. So very soft and silky like butter. Really. Zohar guessed that the trolley cord and vented sweatband were decent indicators this came from the 30-'s or 40's. I can't be certain, although I take him at his word, but what is cool to me is that Blue Island is my home town. I was hoping one of you could give me a more definite timeframe when this hat may have been made? Perhaps the logo can shed some light. I was also hoping someone can give some insight as to what 'Pliafelt' is? I've never heard the term but I'm sure some of you have.

This hat has been a favorite of mine for a while but it's just not my size. I'd love to know about when it was made as well or anything else about it. I wish it were my size because this particular style fits my personality and my facial structure well. The felt on this one is very soft, although not quite as soft as the first and older Mallory in this thread. One other point I wanted to capture is what kind of box may these have been shipped in back when they were made? Anyone have any idea?

Basically I'd love to find out anything I can about these two hats. I'm just very interested since I've had them for so long and never really knew much about them. Since they don't fit I've put them up for sale in the classifieds. I'd much rather have someone here or anywhere who will wear them and put them to good use instead of just sitting in a box in my closet taking up some space. I know if someone from here gets them they will definitely be put to good use.

I hope my first post will open up some discussion and help me get to know a few of you I don't and also give me some solid info on these hats which I can share with my Grandmother. I know she'd dig it. I'm sure any info some of you will have will be far more than I'm currently aware of. I'm welcoming any discussion of these hats or the like. Of course, if you have any questions for me, shoot away and I'll answer as best I can.

Your hats are breath taking. To have a hat in perfect condition is rare, but two. That is just great. It seems that you have taken good care of them as well. I don't think that either is from the thirties. The Mallory10 looks to be from the forties and the smaller brimmed hat could be forties or early fifties. Beautiful hats both.

The condition appears to be impeccable. I for one would like to know the dimensions of each hat. Brim size, bow color, crown height etc. Thank you for showing them. Welcome to the Fedora Lounge.

Thanks for the welcome everybody and thanks for the compliments on the hats. I wish I had more info on where these hats actually came from, but Grandma is the best I can do.

H1 specs are as follows: The hat is listed as a size 7 with an approximate crown height of 5 1/2" and a brim width of 2 5/8" with a bound edge that's a little over 1/8". The beautiful vintage ribbon is stiched in and is at a width of 1 1/8". The inside sweatband measurement is at about 21 3/4" by using a cloth measurer.

H2 specs are as follows: The hat is listed as a size 7 3/8" with an approximate unbashed crown height of 5 1/2" and a brim width of 2 1/4" with a bound edge that's a little over 1/8". The beautiful vintage ribbon is stiched in and is at a width of 7/8". The inside sweatband measurement is at about 22 3/4" - 7/8" by using a cloth measurer.

I had a couple of people ask me about the Pliafelt so I'm very interested in hearing about what this is if anyone has an idea.

It's a very nice, light felt.

That size 7 Premier is an outstanding hat. If I were a
size 7 there would be no stopping me. The cut design
in the sweatband is absolutely unique.

OK. In doing a little research in the archives here I've found out about the Pliafelt. An older post read: The Pliafelt was meant to be a hat made of soft and plaible felt. It was more of a dress hat grade. Something similar would be the vintage Borsalino Alessandrias.

This makes total sense because (I swear to God) the first thing I said about it was how pliable it was. D'OH! I should've put two and two together.

For anybody interested in these hats, as I mentioned in my initial post, I've put them up for auction on ebay and posted the links in the classifieds since I can't post them here in this section. There is still quite a bit of time left.
