I am 5’7”, 160lbs with a 39” chest. I have a size 40 and wish I had a 38.

We are pretty much the same size except I am 1" taller. The 40 vs 38 reminded me that when I tried on a 40 Mulholland while in Japan this past winter, I am now recalling the 40 was not snug or really fitted and if they had a 38 I would have tried it to compare. The 40 did feel OK and not overly big or roomy but unfortunately there was no 38 on hand to compare with.

My size 40 Freewheelers Mulholland is as follows:
Chest: 21.5"
Shoulder: 18.5"
Back: 23.75"
Arms: 24" measured straight

I am 5'7" 165lb with a 41.5" chest and a 31.5" waist.
This is how it fits me:

Look great! Could you give me some advice, Caboose or Mulholland? My build pretty skinny: 5'8", 140 lbs with a 34.5" chest, 17" shoulder and a 29.5" waist. Thanks!

If you're that thin, I think I would lean Caboose. The cut is more vertical and thinner in terms of profile. Still, you should go with which jacket you prefer the look of.

Yeah, you right. My only gripe, the Caboose's back, beautiful but too "eye-catching" for my taste. I wish it has the Speed master's back instead. So, what size should I get if I go with Caboose in your opinion? It is rare, but maybe I'm the lucky 1%.

@TheBigEraser @puiyc1203 just checking in with you guys if maybe you guys have friends who may have experience with Mulholland/la brea. if one wear a size 36 Mulholland, will that also be the same size 36 for a La Brea? I've been recommended by genco and speedway Sendai to keep to a size 36 but just wanted to check in if maybe you anyone has first hand experience with this

I have a Mulholland size 44.
My chest is 43-44 and I have relatively broad shoulders. The 44 is a perfect comfortable fit. The Mulholland style fits slightly larger than other “slim fitting” Japanese brands.

the 36 Mulholland fits perfectly for me, the 36 La Brea seem to be too small in the chest with 19.7" pit to pit but if I go size up to a 38 then it will be 20.5" chest but it will have super wide shoulders/sleeves so maybe I shouldn't even consider this lol

One thing I have learned in this game is everyone must find a jacket that fits his individual physique.
I have seen many jackets I would love to fit but 1 in 7, very roughly speaking, would even come close to fitting. I believe most of us are in the same boat. Find that awesome fit! Quite the journey. You find a style/pattern to fit, then the maker changes their specs ala Freewheelers Mulholland.

I just got finished writing a message in another thread but I kinda wish I had wrote something similar to what you did here haha! I'm just now discovering how very unique everyone's journey and search for the perfect jacket is. I thought maybe I would like Real McCoy's and then I tried some on and found that, for the most part, they weren't for me.

Im with you. I’ve tried Freewheelers (Mulholland) and Real MCCoys (Nelson) and I’m totally baffled by the measurements as they relate to wearability.

I think where I’ve landed, is that I pretty much need to be able to try on a jacket before I buy one which rules out “online”

If you feel tight on the chest with Mulholland 36 with T-shirt only, la brea 36 is your choice. If you can put a hoodie or sweater or shirt in your Mulholland 36, then la brea 36 is too large for you. Then you should go for 34 or other jackets. And motorcycle jacket has long sleeve, if you are short in height, then be careful of the sleeve and body length.
Of same size, my experience of freewheeler jacket from large to small of chest and cutting roughly is
Journeyman ≈ switchyard > la brea > Mulholland> four corners ≈ brakeman > speed master > San Mateo ≥ centinela
Freewheelers design different jacket of different cutting, for any particular jacket one size larger could be too large for you, one size smaller could be too small. Therefore you have to try, and Mulholland is the most basic entry-level jacket of normal size. Most of people buy it as the first jacket and take it as reference just like redwing.
Hence if you are not sure, I suggest you buy four corners, the least risk of unfit you would face.

^^ this. La Brea offers more room compared to Mulholland in the same size. If you have a perfect fit already with 36 Mulholland, I would definitely NOT recommend 38. Keep in mind that La Brea has relatively long sleeves and wide shoulders.

Go for 36, safest choice. And if you can still zip up the 36 Mulholland with a hoodie, you can even try 34 to get the true old style short jackets (then you need high waisted trousers), but 34 is quite difficult to find. Just keep an eye on Yahoo auction. Good luck and look forward to welcoming you in La Brea family. Truly fascinating jacket.

I find the Muholland to fit as follows…I am a pretty standard size 40. Have a 40” chest

I had a 40 Muholland fit great in body length and sleeve length but was very tight in the chest and shoulders…it felt like a 38.
I then bought a 42, it felt great in the Chest and shoulders..like a typical 40, but was a bit to long in the sleeves and body. My $.02.

Also…don’t trust sizing guides. I looked at many and they were all different for the same size jacket depending on which website I found. Ask the seller to take photos of the tape measure on the jacket you are looking to purchase and send them to you for verification.
On a jacket at this price point, they should be willing to do that for you.

Exactly this on getting a tape to the jacket.

I have an older brown Mulholland and I can wear a lightweight sweater/hoodie with it. The black Mulholland I have I can only wear with a tshirt because the armholes haven't stretched out and I haven't breaked the jacket in yet. I think the size 36 shoulder/body length measurement will work for me, the sleeves is longer than what I'm used to but it's easy enough to get altered since I live close by to a leather garment maker.

Thanks for that info regarding sizing differences between the leather jackets/coats that FW makes. I'm sure that will help others who read it as well. I'm lucky that I have the Mulholland already so it's easier to compare with the La Brea. I think this will be my exit jacket so I am hoping for the best.

noted will not go a size up, got it that the la Brea runs bigger. yep my Mulholland is perfect fit for me so I'll listen to recommendations made by you guys and genco/speedway.

I can fit a lightweight trim fitting hoodie/sweater with my Mulholland, it's tighter with the black one since it's not fully broken in but no issues at all when I lightly layer up with the brown one. Thank you, I really hope to get to own one. It really is a gem of a jacket, I hope I can find one preowned but they are taking preorders now for next years batch so there's also that option.

you can post a pic for me to take a look. both your brown and black mulholland.
you know, I am exceptionally professional in this.
but I personally dont advice size 34 labrea. I mean you can try size 36 or let go of this jacket. It is too hard to find 34. and there are other options available.
