I blame the vest. That suit is relatively my size and I have found less and less three piece suits to fit sizes M and L. I wouldn't have paid that much. . .it's not eccentric enough for my tastes.

I will say it is rare, having a vest. But it is not a spectacular fabric or style. I didn't know the maker was such high quality. I have seen many and thought they were typical good quality.

I agree with the size. I would typically subtract an inch and a half for a single breasted jacket in that size.

A size 41 is not so rare. anything 42 will bring a good price usually, and 44 or bigger will bring a much better price.

I would suggest that it is possible the buyer thought he was buying a size 44 to be willing to pay that price. I have seen experienced sellers that I think should offer better service simply put the measurement and lease no size, not even mentioning that they are not doing so. The only numbers mentioned would be the measurement, thus leaving the impression that that is the size. an inexperienced shopper could well assume so.

Mind you, I am not accusing any particular seller of having nefarious intentions. But I do think some do that intentionally. When I sell, I would rather have happy clients than make money at their expense, so I go to great lengths to give accurate measurements and accurate estimates of size, explaining how I arrived at it, and suggesting they measure a suit they own for comparison. I am very gratified when buyers tell me how perfectly their suit fits and how happy they are with it. Then again, i suppose I m a hobby seller, often making very little off an item. I just can't resist buying a good suit in a thrift shop and passing it along.

I hope the buyer is happy with it. It may be just a couple of people for whom price is not a big issue. many men think nothing of paying much more for a suit, so why not. We forget how comparatively cheap a vintage suit is sometimes.

True, you don't get much suit for $500 these days, at least at retail.

The suit that pdxvintagette had at auction brought substantially less; Roughly the same size and, IMO, more unique. [huh]

Another suit that sold for surprisingly little: http://cgi.ebay.com/1930s-Mens-3pc-..._trkparms=72:1205|66:2|65:12|39% 3A1|240:1318

Especially since it resembles this one:

Kuppenheimer history

Cut and paste company info below. My very first suit was a double breasted pinstripe Kuppenheimer that I got for my high school graduation in 1991 from a Kuppenheimer store in Lynnwood, WA. They were a full service men's store, shirts, ties ... everything made by Kuppenheimer. Is still a great suit and remains in my closet, though it doesn't exactly fit anymore, but I'm saving it for my son. Very classic and should stand the test of time.

"Bernard Kuppenheimer emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1850 when he was 21 years old. In 1865, he became a partner in the Chicago clothing firm of Kohn, Claybugh & Einstein, which had been established two years earlier. In 1876, the old firm dissolved, and B. Kuppenheimer and his son Jonas started their own men's clothing company. By the 1880s, when they employed as many as 1,000 people to manufacture garments, annual sales reached $1 million. By 1910, the company employed close to 2,000 men and women at shops around the city. Kuppenheimer continued to operate independently as a leading manufacturer of men's clothing until 1982, when it was purchased by another old Chicago clothing company, Hart, Schaffner & Marx (later Hartmarx). By the mid-1990s, when the company was headquartered in Atlanta, sales were lagging, many of its stores were closing, and it entered into bankruptcy. After Hartmarx sold the troubled company to an intermediate investment group, Kuppenheimer was purchased in 1997 by the Men's Warehouse suit retailer, who closed many more Kuppenheimer stores and eventually folded the Kuppenheimer business into its own. See also Hart, Schaffner & Marx."

All the vintage suit deals kill me - whether they go for high or low amounts. The reason is I'd have a better chance of spending the night with Charlize Theron than finding one in my size(s).

I take a 38L jacket and have a 30" waist and 34" length for trousers. That combination never even gets close to me in these wonderful vintage suits.

Oh well, I do real well for myself on shirts, blazers, ties, watches, shoes and hats.

Never say die! I wish I knew you back in 1999 when I was at a friend's shop and a beautiful cream double breasted belted back three piece suit was for sale... just about those measurements! I'm a 42L and this thing was a 38L! I have found many other suits that are long but, thin! I'm the harder size to find being a 42L... trust me and I have a healthy collection of suits! You gotta keep looking on or off of ebay!

Happy hunting!
