John, why are you making this so hard?? A$ is Australian dollar which is weak right now. US$ is US dollar which is getting stronger.

Not so hard. ;)
My fault entirely. I thought we were discussing the US dollar.
Stupid of me.
I suppose it's because we are all conditioned by the news into thinking that there is only one dollar.
Sorry for any annoyance I may have caused.
But if you look at the first post, it was actually about the US dollar and how it's current high value against other currencies makes it attractive for Americans to buy imported goods.

Sorry if I came across as a bit of a jerk in my post - it wasn't intentional, but supposed to be more tongue-in-cheek. Re-reading my post, I see it doesn't really come across like that!

I guess working in the financial markets I get more of an overview of what's happening in Australia than you get in the normal press, which tends to concentrate on the US dollar.

The charge came through 500 GBP = $798.41 USD I was pleasantly surprised. Not the lowest its been lately, but certainly not bad.

Bringing this back to a historical theme before it gets locked for not being so,

What was the average golden era exchange rate? average wages? etc, etc

I know over here the average weekly wage in the late 50s was about £7

I hadn't considered the exchange rate when I ordered an Aero recently and mostly expected it to be poor as usual for the USD. I was presently surprised that my 400GBP jacket showed up as 590USD. This charge was made by Aero yesterday, 14 Nov.
Looks like it is definitely a good time to make those purchases.
