My great-aunt Katherine smoked and drank until she was 99. The doctors told her to quit for her health, she complied and died a couple weeks later.

After 99 years that was what was keeping her going.

Exactly. These doctors don't know. It's luck of the draw. Everyone in my family drinks and smokes and lives to be near 100. It must be in the genetics somewheres.

Yep you hear those stories I know that our neighbors granddad lived till he was 104 and smoked since he was 10years old,they did say that the smoking finally did him in but at 104 you could die from taking a crap IMO

A friend's mother who was a chronic smoker for 30+ years passed away from cancer in her 50s. Her mother smoked so nonstop that her house was in a constant state of fog and she lived into her mid 90s. Life is a Russian roulette crapshoot.

Genes,particularly good ones, can override many of our own abuses.

As I told my Mother In Law the 1st time I met her when I was 35 "I'm in perfectly good shape for a 75 year old man with 1 lung"to which she replied,you've got 1 lung and you smoke.
