Everyday Fellows of the Golden Era?

I saw this photograph on the HAMB today:

And it made me think of the Powder Room’s “Everyday Women of the Golden Era” thread. It seems to me that it would be beneficial to turn out some of those collections of candid photographs from days gone by, that we might find somebody to emulate outside of the Clark Gables and Cary Grants we see so often.

You know, to tell you the truth I think this is a fine idea. I’m all about the movies of the era and those icons that have transcended time but, what about the average Joe? Well, this is one topic I really enjoy.

Seeing so many old photos and how people really looked day to day is one thing I try and really emulate in my appearance.

These faces are the people who were our grandfathers, great grandfathers and so on. Time has washed away their names and memories to whom they originally belonged to but, we find an interest in them when found at antique shops or thrift stores. Sad really when you think of it.

I buy snap shots and portraits now and again when I’m really impressed by them. These are real people from the era and I always think of all those who lived in that era when I think of the Great Depression or the War Years.

Here’s a few of mine:

And I love this pic of my nan's brother William from the early 30s. Why he is wearing a ladies robe in what looks like the middle of nowhere - I will never know!

These are bunch of pics of relatives and friends of relatives that have no info on the back of them but dates - I forgot to ask my nana about them before she died a few years back. My dad and I think we know who some of them are but have no idea about others. But I like them because they show men...doing stuff

Yep, you are right, that's where I thought it was too. Least that building is still there! Photographers on the street would take people's photos as they walked through town then they would take your name, how many copies you wanted and you'd pay them there and then and they'd post them to you. It's how so many people without cameras in the day aquired photos.

Thanks BH. I have a few more I will post later. Have to scan them. I am glad that I sat down with with nana for a few hours 5 years ago and we wrote on the back of at least 50 old photos in pencil - names, who they were related to and estimated years; eg

- Nana's (Violet Turner) brother
- 1932, Kalgoorlie

If you have old family pics, sit down with your elders before they are gone and write on the back of them for future generations or else they just become meaningless faces in future, sadly.

Yes that is my Grandmother, and people do think I look like her until people see my mom, then they realize I look most like her.

I certainly can from left to right my Grandfather, my uncle Freddy, my father, my uncle Jorge, my Grandmother, and the infant is my Uncle Eddy

How old is this photo? Judging by the clothing and furniture, it doesn't look particularly ancient...although I wouldn't dare suggest a date.

My Guess would be very early 60's like 61, 62 or 63. I know it was after they left Cuba in 59 and were in Nicaragua. And she didn't keep her hands on them they got in lots of trouble quite frequently.

I posted this in a thread I started a year or so ago on Honolulu in the Golden Age, but I really love this picture. Its a guy and his lady in the 1930s in Honolulu. He's just damn sharp in this photo.

My paternal grandpa. I'm fairly certain this has to be after he returned from WWII. He was a p.o.w. for 3.5 yrs and his family thought that he was dead.
