I've been doing the vintage thing for over 7 years now. I let it rule what haircut I get, what glasses I get, etc.

I think I want to get something modern next time. I'm not going to give up vintage forever. I still love to collect my things I collect. And I will never give up shopping at flea markets and antique stores, But...

I want to get really fun glasses. I want a haircut that is outside of my "comfort zone".

My theory is...hair always grows back. I'm stuck in a rut.

Anyone else do this? Thoughts?

I do it all the time. I'm all over the place. The thing is, I don't like ONLY vintage, I like a little of everything. Vintage is a part of me, but it's not only me. Do what you feel like you want to do.. just like you said.. hair always grows back. You can always go dive into your clothes again, and rediscover them.. It kind of makes it fun and new again when you've been away for awhile. Explore and have fun!

I get it now and then, like waking up with a "vintage hangover." A few days of suits and ties, fedoras, heavy leather shoes and driving my 55 Chevy with its lack of power steering usually leave me with a break in mind. That means denim, sneakers, not combing my hair and taking it easy for a while. Then I'll go out and look for more old clothes. Almost ironic...

In my former job I had to occasionally go to business conference type events where I had to look reasonably "modern," and it drove me crazy -- I felt like I was dressed up in a costume, pretending to be something I wasn't. I owned two outfits that I wore only for these things, and I couldn't wait to get out of them.

As far as clothing goes, I have enough variety that I can usually pull out something to suit my mood.I imagine, based on the fact that we are having this discussion, that you are not the impulsive extremist that I am. I have done crazy things like chopping off my waistlength hair to 1/4 inch all over. Yes, it grows back, but it is frustrating when you wake up 2 weeks later and realize,no...i really do miss my vintage look. I am really getting too old for that kind of foolishness, yet i did it just last year.:eusa_doh:

I try not to impulsively do things like buy new glasses in an extreme style because i know i will soon regret it .Right now, my glasses are a very classic pair of Ralph Lauren wire frames, and i need to get them changed.I have been tempted to get something funky, but i know me well enough to know, i would just go back to weraing the old ones and not being able to see.lol

But that's just me...i do wander into other styles, but i really don't care for that much modern clothing anyway, i just kinda dabble now and then. But, i think your idea of getting a hairstyle completely unlike you've ever done is fabulous and go for the funky glasses!! you don't need to be as dysfunctional as I am about it:p

Besides I love the idea of having a 2007 hairdo and cool glasses with vintage clothing.Who's to say you can't have it all?

i usually dress in "stay at home mom to a 6 month old who pukes alot" kinda style. which means alot of jogging suits, jeans, etc.
and since i have a 6month old....i NEVER curl my hair just to sit at home and play on the floor.
and since i have a 6 month old...we don't go out much due to being parents and i'm not working so "date money" is hard to come by.

so....the only time i really dressed vintage and did vintage hair was to: work, going out on dates, and going to WW2 reenactments (which i don't do much anymore: refer back to the 6 month old).

so....i keep holding onto this hairstyle that "one day i will need it to do vintage". but that day hasn't come in LONG time.

i think it's a "comfort zone" kinda thing. i'm so used to having "vintage friendly hair". i think i just need to bite the bullet and get a new modern funky kinda haircut. and semi-funky glasses. i'm not going to go crazy with the glasses thing...i still want to look kinda "normal me", but with a twist.

but i feel guilty. yes...i'm in therapy! :p

Totally understand! I collect vintage from 1860 on up, and esp. being a stylist I fight the vintage/modern thing all the time.

This is why I collect as many hair pieces as I can. I just cut 6 inches off of my hair, which I'm glad, but it will limit my updo abilities, plus my Titanic/Rose passion. I've decided I will just spend the $$ on a longer hair piece for when I want to wear my Titanic dresses, as I'm tired of dealing with the long hair daily just waiting for that "one day" I'm *Rose*.

And like tonight, I did the most adorable mod cut on a client! But I just keep telling myself that I'll go more modern when I get older. [huh]

It's a mix

Once I got fat, I could no longer wear most of my vintage or find big enough and cheap enough items to replace the tiny stuff with - so I wear a mix of vintage and modern pieces. But it still looks classic enough to pass for vintage.

I haven't wanted to do this, it is sheer necessity. I guess I still find modern looks just ugly. And I can't stand modern glasses, I think they make everyone look the same! Maybe I just hate them because they are so much like my first pair, circa 1971.

So I guess, no, I don't want to get away from it all...

I think I suffer from fashion multiple personality!lol

An authentic head to toe vintage look no longer suits my lifestyle nor my personality, but the last few years have been an experimentation of blending my modern and vintage loving selves.
Contradictions in attire and hair really appeal to me now.As an example: if I am wearing a more classic cut, I will color my hair a much more vibrant and fake shade of red or vice versa.
It's the same with clothing.I'll wear a t-shirt and jeans, but throw on my vintage beaded cardigan and cute ballet flats.

Hi Leatte,

Sounds like it's a bit more than just the look? Thought I'd share a couple of things I do. A bit of background - I set up my own consultancy last year (which sounds very glam - it's not). This happened rather quickly, after being told that if I wanted to keep walking then I had to cut down the amountof travel I was doing, reduce my workload, stop carrying stuff and spend a couple of hours a day doing exercises to strengthen my rather screwed up back. Long and short - I had to leave my job and do something that allowed me to be in complete control of my time.

Downside was no savings or cash at all and I was the main breadwinner (hubby has a very poorly paid job). So no money, no job, little movement and a fight each month to pay the rent - oh and no clients to begin with :)

Have to say I felt quite rubbish and then I started putting on tons of weight (mainly from the darn exercise routine - can't buy new clothes no money...) So I came up with a few things to help cheer me up:

Wash in wash out hair dye - great fun, big change, no commitment required and it is very, very cheap :)

No cash for a date night? Dress up at home and have a "formal dinner" we do this every Saturday now and I think it has helped keep us both sane! Gladrags on, something lovely to eat, best china (well we don't have that but it's clean :) ) cheap bottle of wine candles and you are away. Make it really special by setting a time to meet for pre dinner drinks :)

Pampering baths - get some time to yourself and luxuriate - if you can pull this off the day of your at home date - all the better!

I also but myself cheap flowers from the market - they make me smile!

Hope some of this helps, big life changes (like having a little one) can make you feel a bit lost - play, have a laugh, hair grows back, classic styles will still be there, and most importantly have fun and don't take it all too seriously :)

wedding belle: i think you hit the nail. i had a HUGE 180 degree life change happen in May with the birth of our son. and i'm still adjusting. i think i'm in that "what can i easily change in my life to give it some spice?". and i figure hair and glasses is an easy thing to change.

my aunt and sister are beauticians so i will ask them both for their opinions.

thanks everyone for your opinions :)

As a college student I definitely have to take breaks. Pretty much the only constants are doing my hair vintage and wearing red lipstick, both of which I stop doing around midterms and finals where sleep is more important to me than how I look.

I feel weird and self-conscious when I do it too much though. I hate how my hair looks straight, it's way too long, but it's just the right length when curled. So I always feel really awkward when it's straight.

I've never been a completely "vintage person." Rather, I try to have a wardrobe that preserves a sense of style and confidence and save the suits and fedoras for when it's most suitable.
