Zohar, you have picked up what is considered the best book ever published on this subject. Congratulations! It not only reveals the styles themselves, but how such fashions were formed and disseminated. Yours is a book to read cover-to-cover.
Unfortunately, many of the editions sold on the Internet have been stolen from public libraries. A library near my home has a copy (in the reference section, so it can't be checked out). I have this fantasy that one day, it will be "decommissioned" from the library, and I'll buy it from them for peanuts.
Incidentally, it's also fun to look at the book's section on "contemporary" 1970s fashions. The photos of funky shoes alone are worth a brouse and a chuckle (or a wince).
Interesting you mention that... The library I work at was weeding the collection, and the collection development team decided to weed this particular book. I found it in the "dump" pile , and snatched it before it could be thrown away. According to our catalog, it was last used in-house in 1983, which is why they decided to weed it.
What a find! Like I said: "Dumpsters are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." This one didn't even make it to the dumpster though and that is a good thing.
Thanks for sharing so much of it. What a great book. Now I need one.
I stopped by the Milwaukee Public Central library today...they don't have the book, but they have every issue of Esquire ever printed, and Apparel Arts from 1945-1948.
You lucky lucky man, these books go for 680 pounds on Amazon UK! Every single second hand book store I go into I search for one of these, hoping I find a bookstore owner that has no idea how valuable that book is. There used to be one at my local library and I used to dream about walking out with it because I could never find a cheap copy. Couldn't quite bring myself to do it though!
Maybe if we all write to Esquire they will reprint the book!!!!
Great minds think alike! I thought of going to my local library and scanning/photocopying the pages I want! Could make my own copy of the book. Have found a library close to home that has the book.
I wonder if I can register to buy the book if it ever goes into the dumpster pile...
