The one that drives me nuts is "LOL" - it shows up everywhere, and I remember a newspaper or magazine article where the author actually used it in a quote of what he said to someone. If the ones using those three little letters were laughing out loud as much as what their typed text would lead one to believe, someone would surely have carted them to the looney bin. Who wants to talk to someone who has to "LOL" at the end of every sentence?

I propose "STS" (Snickering to Self)

Have any of you ever typed a acronym like "LOL" or "BRB" when you are not on a computer or online at all? A friend of mine's brother did in a school report of his.. I see a future where there is no physical emotion. Everyone just says out loud, "LOL!"

I tend to use emoticons to ensure the intent of my post is understood, which I feel is required due to the conversational aspect of forums. For example:

I hate you.

I hate you. lol

The first one could be taken literally, whereas the second one ensures it's taken as a joke

I am ashamed to say that I have on accident said, "LOL" instead of actually laughing at something in person. I was with my daughter, she was trying to be humorous, it wasn't quite working, I was trying to be polite and give a light laugh/giggle at her and it came out "LOL" I think that shows I was spending to much time on the computer at that time in my life. lol (p.s. I was actually laughing in my head at that time right there) lol

Being a bit of a stone face in real life, I never use smilies, unless heavily coaxed...Or whenever I try to write "lollypop" and "lollygagging".

Ah yes, can be annoying - thank goodness for the "disable smilies in text" checkbox to get around it.

Of course, then if you want to actually use a smiley, you are stuck with the old school ASCII versions - ;-P
