Emoticons- Are You Doing What You Type?

I've wondered every time someone has put a smile, a frown, a laugh, etc, if the person whom typed it is really doing what they type, like smiling, laughing, frowning, etc. So when you type in a "lol" or a ":)" are you really giving these emotions? Do you wonder if the person you are typing to is as well?

And I'm sure Nick's cat is truly yelling at other drivers, too. :D

I use emoticons responsibly.

The one that drives me nuts is "LOL" - it shows up everywhere, and I remember a newspaper or magazine article where the author actually used it in a quote of what he said to someone. If the ones using those three little letters were laughing out loud as much as what their typed text would lead one to believe, someone would surely have carted them to the looney bin. Who wants to talk to someone who has to "LOL" at the end of every sentence?

I sometimes use a smiley emoticon—the original emoticon, as I remember it—not because I'm smiling, but to clarify to my reader that the previous text was meant to be humorous.

In that context it's a literary crutch, I suppose. I often find myself putting in the smiley, then taking it out again and letting my (subtle or obscure) humor stand for itself. F*** 'em if they can't take a joke, you know? :)

I actually tend to use smileys a lot, because I find they to be very useful. When writing something, one can appear a lot colder than what he intented too, so I find it's a great way to stay clear of most misunderstandings.

(I am the of person who gets "offended" (sorry can't find a better word) easily if I find someone is being to cold or bold, so smiley really helps to smoothen dialogs)
