Embossed felt under brim?

I was wondering if anyone else has come across this type of embossed felt on the undersides of their fedoras:

Does it serve any practical purpose?

I have not seen anything like that.

It looks like that is where the stiching for the sweatband once was.

Or,

Where the sewing machine hit the felt as they were making the hat.

Just my thoughts.

And now to our next contestant!!
It is part of the "air cushion" or "Air Vac" feature of the hat. Look closely..and notice this: your sweatband is sewn all the way around the hat EXCEPT the part where the 30 little squares are "stamped" into the felt. GENTLY insert the tiny tip of your finger in between the sweatband and the felt. Notice there is a "gap". A corrigated insert went in there .. like a little cardboard wafered piece...

Guess what? It was to improve circulation of air and keep your forehead cool, and not sweat thru the felt.

What brand is your hat shown? I have this feature on both my SILVER BEAVER 50 gray and light brown MacLaughlan hats.

MK, do you ever wonder if Indy's fedora looked like that Bogie lid, how many COWers would be pokin' holes in their hats? It's a good thing distressing hasn't come to that...

Does anyone have a MacLaughlan fedora like the ones mentioned by Andykev?
