I'm sitting at home channel surfing and came across a tribute concert to Ella Fitzgerald on PBS. Runs tonight from 8-10 eastern. I guess I know what I'm doing for the next two hours!

It was a pretty good show, even it was "We Need Money" week for PBS. I have been a huge fan of Ella's for years. My go to CD when I can't decide what I want to hear, vintage or otherwise, is always the Ella and Louis recordings. I never tire of them.

I was looking forward to hearing some good jazz.
This PBS "Great Performance" was baad!!

The only half decent performances were by Dave Kos, Natalie Cole, and Patty Austin. The rest of the performers did not belong in a salute to the Great Ella!!

Where were some great jazz singers??
Abbey Lincoln & Dee Dee Bridgewater should have been included.
And what was Wynona Judd doing there?

FYI-I did not recognize Patti Austin. She's half her former self and a blonde!!

Was it called "Happy Birthday, Ella"?

There was a concert a month ago in honor of Ella's birthday. I would have liked to have gone. They had a great line up of musicians.

I was up at 3 AM last night and found this on PBS. Ella sung me to sleep.

What good is melody, what good is music
If it ain't possessin' something sweet
It ain't the melody, it ain't the music
There's something else that makes the tune complete

It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing
It don't mean a thing, all you got to do is sing
It makes no diff'rence if it's sweet or hot
Just give that rhythm ev'rything you got
It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing
Do wah, do wah, do wah!!
