electric desk fans!!!!

i was in my grandmothers garage, she is 90, and i happened to look right into an old rusted desk fan, metal blades, heavy as a son of a gun and i pointed it out...she said i could have it, so i put it in a bag and off to my house i went...the only problem is i cant date it...it is a:

Mastercraft 105-120V 55W Model 1003(i think) 60 cycle...

anyone good with older stuff can help me date it i would really appreciate it...it needs restoring so i have a nice little project on my hands..i cant wait..i got excited when i saw it...maybe i can find some other old things in her garage...yay!!! thanks all i figure the regulars that frequent the Radio and Telephone threads might help

I'm definitely no good at trying to date the fan. A picture might help.

I don't know what it is exactly, but vintage desk fans were the first items that got me into vintage. There's just something about this fewer, elaborate spokes wrapped around shiny metal blades that attract my attention so much more than the plastic, boring fans of today. Not to mention metal blades cool much better!

Last week, one of my friends was visiting me. I had my Emerson Electric ca: 1940's fan on my desk running. She told me she had a strange desire to stick her finger in the fan, or throw a pencil at it. I told her it was people like her that caused companies to abandon the elaborate spokes style! lol

Spiffy little fan--good buy for $1! Seems like most vintage fans in antique stores and the like have a price of a lot higher. I've seen some for way over $100! I can't remember how much I paid for the two I have, but it certainly wasn't that much.

Oh, antique stores, yes, they will cost more- they have to cover rent, overhead, pay their dealers a piece, etc. Yard sales, well, the owners see it as old junk to get rid of, hee hee

Speaking of fans. I have a vintage desk fan that is so powerful it will just about blow your head off. It gets hot though. Is this normal or does it need oiling or what?

I found a 55W Mastercraft model 1000-B at an antique store today. Very Art-Deco-y (and very heavy!) The owner of the place had it tagged for $65, but he found it had stopped running just yesterday; he had it professionally restored not long ago but it stopped anyways, so I got it for 20 clams! I'm using it as decoration until I can send it to the folks at the link Foofoogal provided. It still gets power (the body got pretty hot when I plugged it in), and the blades moved very slowly; so I suppose it needs some oil. I'm sending it out anyways just for good measure, unless someone here can give me some tips.

I'll post some pictures here soon. I'm too lazy right now.

The ladies from the PR said I should post this over here as well.

Just purchased this vintage Westinghouse fan from etsy for less than $40--which seemed to be the average rate over there for one that was in good working condition. It doesn't oscillate, but that's actually a feature I don't much care for on fans anyways! I've tried to date it without much success. Most guesses are late 40's. I love it in any case!

I got this a an estate sale for an antique store, it was on the floor knocked over and covered with grime. The cord was coming off in pieces and I got it for 12 bucks. A good cleaning, a new cord and a new life. The small lever to make it oscillate is gone, but I am certain that if I can figure out its dimensions I will be able to fab one.

My grandmothers - a GE Alternating Current Fan. Three speeds with 12-inch diameter blades and a much bigger guard, Green motor housing weighs a ton. I don't know what it dates to but I like having it on my desk.

I just found this Eskimo model 101001 desk fan in seafoam green yesterday at the thrift store for 9 bucks. Its a perfect match to the kitchen table so that will be its new home. I just cleaned it, oiled it and will be putting it away now because I wont be needing it in Buffalo for another 7 months...
