I'm with Skeet on that call...Cooperstown has the best selection, and in my opinion, more authentic ball caps...plus, they do special orders, as I had 2 "shorty-bill" Chicago White Sox caps made back when I was collecting 1920's "Black Sox" memorabilia (think John Sayles' "Eight Men Out")...I love them! Plus, I picked up several 1920's repo vintage bats from here...

Cooperstown does make better caps, I have a couple. But they don't make repro football jerseys from the 20's and 30's as far as I know. Does anyone else?

It looks like they only go back to '63, and they are 300 clams! Yikes. I just liked the look of the 30's stuff just as a sweater option that's still vintage looking without all the crazy logos and such. And they are on sale for $99, which is within my comfort level. Mitchell and Ness does make a good looking product though.

I do own one, and couldn't be more pleased with it. They offer hundreds and hundreds of documented caps...and will be happy to work with you if they don't have what you want. I was interested in having a ballcap worn by an early Skeet shooter in Utica NY reproduced...if only we could figure out what it had been! The owner, Will, was very helpful indeed. Highest recommendation...This company has been mentioned before, but it seemed like it might be a good thing to do it here, as well. The older thread, with some pics, is HERE:

Well...the early "Skeet" cap came yesterday. I must admit....there's a certain perversity lurking behind my having this reproduced...I hardly need remark that just about everybody on a Skeet field today is wearing...a ballcap. And that just about everybody on a Skeet field in the '30s was...not. It's the same instinct that, back when I was doing a lot of 17C reenacting and hanging around with the Plimoth Plantation folks--who spend their entire lives trying to convince people that the Pilgrims DID NOT wear black clothes with big, square white collars and giant buckles on their hats, belts, and shoes--led me to have a very well documented set of 1640s clothes that were...just that. An in-joke for those with eyes and a bit of knowledge.

Anyway...As I said above, Will was very generous with his time and talent on this one; the time from order to delivery was just as advertised (long, but worth it); and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. As I said in the original post above, one of the many things Cooperstown gets right is the difference in shape across decades...you can judge for yourself by comparing the original 1933 photo with the repro. When worn...the angle of the bill against the cap is JUST LIKE THE PHOTO:

Just for giggles, here's the first cap I ordered from Cooperstown; it is in their regular line (which says a great deal: this is an extremely obscure team!): The Haverhill, MA base ball club from the early 20th Century. My grandfather was associated with them, and oddly enough I've ended up living the next town over:

For the quality, ease of doing business, and amazing variety, I think the price asked is more than reasonable. But, twice a year I think (one around spring training, and I think another around the World Series?) they offer a tremendous sale on everything they offer. And then the deal is even more amazing.

Mitchell and Ness do not worry about the finer details. One of the outrageous examples was the hockey jackets from the 1950's they claimed to reproduce. The arm patch with crossing Canadian and American flags showed the Canadian Maple Leaf Flag. That particular flag didn't exist until 1965 when it replaced the old Canadian Flag which had the Union Jack in the upper left.

About 10 years ago Ebbets Field had the rights to manufacture old NHL items. They produced several old distressed leather hockey jackets which were very impressive. The Boston Bruins was old goatskin leather with thick chenille crests on the arms and over the heart. It was a from the year the Bruins won the Stanley Cup (1940). I have searched high and low for one since but have not succeeded in finding one.
