Lots of misleading games played on eBay. Nothing actually unlawful, just typical Marketing Fluff.

examples:

A "Monte Cristo" is NOT a hat made in Montecristi, Equador.

A hat that is guaranteed to be "authentic" will indeed be a hat.

"Ultrafino Panama Hats" is the name of the company, not a description of the merchandise.

"MONTECRISTI ULTRAFINO PANAMA HATS" is the name of an eBay store, not a description of the merchandise.

"Panama Hat Works of Montecristi" is the name of a company, not a description of the merchandise.

Quality designations vary by seller. "Fino" does not have a definitive meaning, you have to take the time to find out what each seller means by the terms he uses.

If the text of the listing doesn't specifically SAY the hat was made in Montecristi it probably wasn't.

Makes it kinda tough if you don't know much about "Panama" hats. (Even the name "Panama" hats is misleading since most are really made in Equador.)

That's why I list city of weaving in every hat auction.

Hmmm... The picture on the first auction is a center dent, but he states it is a teardrop. I can't really tell about the color either. Is that gray or brown? It looks like a beach mud brown to me. I'm intrigued but confused to say the least.

This one is closest to what I had in mind as far as I can tell, but I can't afford it.

It would be as expensive as my two best hats combined.

Just talked to you on the phone...not center dent, teardrop. Sending photos in a bit.

Thanks from this newbie also.

I am brand new to this forum. Luckily I found the thread about searching before I did my normal basting of questions and found a great deal of information on here that answered most of them. I am probably going to get a panama hat from Panama Bob's e-bay listings for my first panama based on what I found on here. Currently I have three hats that I wear primarily for fishing in Florida or hiking in the mountains. Down here you MUST have a hat when your hair is thinning and you are spending hours on the water. I love my Tilley TM10 for fishing and I also have a Columbia hat with the "neck cover" that I used to wear and still plan to when I fish with a friend who also wears a Tilley TM10. I just can't imagine us both on the same boat with the same hat :) For hiking I have a Henschel crushable leather hat that I have hardly worn. I have a very addictive personality and will probably be sucked into this vortex but think I am going to start with a panama as stated. I do have a question about the hats in Bob's auction and maybe I should contact him directly but I'll ask on here while I am typing my first post. It's about the color of many of the hats. I've mostly seen white panamas and several of the ones on the site look ilke an off-white or almost tan. Is this fairly common? I couldn't find much on this through searching. Thanks for all the help. This is exciting stuff.

That seems to be the color of the overwhelming majority of panama type hats.

I would recommend you e-mail Bob directly. That's what I did, and he was vastly helpful. I paid him this morning for a hat that looks and is described as being quite what I wanted.

Yup, and we both know people don't actually read the descriptions. They assume and then post bad feedback.

No, people do read the descriptions and I know this due to the volume of questions that I receive. I list my company name to separate from the riffraff. If you think otherwise, more power to you. If it is a Montecristi hat that I'm auctioning, I clearly state that in the title.

I love Panama hats and hope to buy some more next year from one of the Ecuadoran suppliers. But for the fishing-hiking kind of use of a hat, actually I support use of a Tilley's hat. You want something that you can sweat into. A straw hat or even more so a Panama hat is dressier than a fishing hat, although you could use them for that; but the key element is "which hat do I want to sweat into extensively?" I try to keep my nice hats nice by not wearing them in a highly sweaty situation.

I agree. I intend on using my Tilley for fishing but am interested in a panama to try out wearing out and about. Of course in Orlando there will be sweating regardless of fishing or walking to a restaurant.

I'll 2nd that. I love my Panamas but for a working straw it's hard to beat a Sunbody.

So I went to check the tracking on my order. It said out for delivery. I looked at the time, about 1/2 hour until normal delivery. For giggles I went and looked out the front door...

Thanks again Panama Bob, and thanks to the people who led me in the right direction.

I worked on it for a good long while. It seems to want to go back to flat after it dries, so I had to start from scratch, then prop the front and back while it cooled and dried. I'd like a little more, but that's all I can get it to do unless someone has some advice to offer.
