I thought about bidding on it, but the proportions looked odd - short brim, tall crown. Or, it could just be the result of poorly posed pictures lol
I thought it looked pretty messed up too.
Something like what that looney tunes mobster would ware..;)

I put in a small bid and was surprise to come home and find I'd won this. I guess people were scared away by the dirtiness, possible mildew? I'm a sucker for a frayed ribbon.
Hm, kinda reminds me of a recent score of mine:

http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-CAVANAGH-BROWN-HAT-APOSSE-ADESSE-SIZE-7-1-2_W0QQitemZ120508451006

I eyeballed it carefully and took the bet. Turned out to be a dark
charcoal gray with a 2 1/2+ brim in great condition. A touch LO, too
(as were the other hats that person was selling, so not much of a risk).
I soaked it in the shower, slapped it around, and it is a superb Cav that
fits my head like a pillow. So comfy.

Courage!

I thought the same thing - the Bugs Bunny mobster. I thought that and the poor pics would scare people off. I'd be interested to see that one in person or in pics on the Lounge.

Narrow brim, tall crown - brings to mind the 1930's. I really loved that Mallory and was pretty sad that it was not my size. Otherwise I would have made it mine... ;)

Brad, do you have some sort of RSS feed for the Lounge, from which you
pick out "Cavanagh"? It's uncanny...

This one is a "late" model- probably 60s or maybe even later.
But who cares? Cavanagh Edge, great color, tall crown, wide brim.
Works for me. The felt is less dense than my other Cavanaghs, but
I like the variety.

ScottF, sorry to hear it didn't work out, but glad to hear you caught it
before shipping. The seller will do fine in the next round, and you saved
yourself a lot of annoyance.

BTW, I have a Pliafelt Mallory. That's some nice stuff. Doesn't really
feel like 20s/30s felt. Feels like an innovation for the "modern" (50s?)
hat wearer...

Well, you all were right - it is 2 1/4" While I still think it's a great deal for a Cav edge with a nice frayed bow like that, I wouldn't wear it, so she's giving me a refund prior to shipping.

Scott, I think you could have done much better financially by receiving the hat and giving it a "proper" auction, with correct measurements and a good cleaning. That hat should really be worth more than that.

I have a finely honed sixth sense that I like to call my "Cavanagh Sense."lol

I hear you on the hats. I've got a grey '60s Cavanagh that I wear quite a bit. It still has that classic Cavanagh styling so that you'd be hard pressed to guess the decade by looking at it.

I'm sure you are right, but I have too many hats, and 2 1/4" is really pushing it. I told her that if she was absolutely sure it's 2 1/4 (and not 2"), to go ahead and send it. It is worth getting a look at, but that stack of hat boxes is once again heading toward the ceiling.

It looks like it needs cleaning and a new ribbon, but I want to have it re-ribboned and re-blocked as a (non-western) fedora anyway, so I'm pleased to have gotten some nice felt at what seems like a good price:

Is the felt really stiff? I picked up one of those not long ago - probably mid-60's - that has a sort-of-stiff crown and a very stiff brim.

I don't know. I just won it this morning and haven't yet received it.

There is a faded ring around the crown as they described. Wonder if PO stacked another hat on top of this one? [huh]

Yes, I noticed that. I'm hoping it will come out when it's cleaned. If not, I'm hoping a wide ribbon will cover it. I'm sort of using Dinerman's and HarpPlayerGene's 7x Clear Beaver (below, respectively) hats as inspiration . . .
