A falling economy lowers all hats.:D

I like to think that every time I find a nice hat on ebay. The gray knox that ended last night had those hopes and the price was even low the day before...but the bidding broke $100 by the time I placed my winning bid...was hoping to have won it for half that. Still, I don't think it was overpriced...so I wait its arrival. Pics next week, hopefully. Anyone on here either of the two bidding it up last night?

+1. That seller is fantastic, so you should have the hat in your hands very soon.

I won a hat from him last Winter - no complaints. Hopefully it fits and my quest for a vintage black hat is over.

I sent the seller an email to that regard, but it was ignored.

'70s looks right to me. I can't imagine that if it was an original with a replacement sweatband that the sweatband would be replaced with a Stetson one. I don't think Stetson at that point did renovations.

The ribbon's in good shape, too good to be of the span-am war period, and looks to be of low quality with poorly done stitching. The felt appears to be of the heavy, thick, but slightly coarse variety used on '70s cowboy hats. Not the thinner (nutria?) felt used on the originals.

No, I'd bet good money that that's a '70s-ish Stetson cowboy hat that someone converted, probably for some kind of re-enactment purpose. Someone got taken.

That sweatband is from a period closer to the war you are remembering.
Hard to nail it down in such poor condition with such poor pictures,
but I'd bet 70s. 1970s, that is. But who knows? Maybe someone put a
new sweatband in an old hat?

I sure do wish I could get ahold of some of those Span-am-style
vent fans, though.

I also sent her a short email, telling her the hat was from the '60s, and got the following response. I responded with a long explanation of Stetson sweatband stamps, and also gave her the address to this website. Despite her desire to avoid misrepresenting the hat, she failed to post our concerns, and I'm betting she kept this bit of info from the winning bidder as well.

"Hi, Thanks for the info. Could you please send me the web site that gives you the info. This hat belongs to my Brother-in-Law who runs a Antique Shop that sells early war items, I am selling the hat for him, he is in the hospital battling Cancer. I certainly don't want to misrepresent a item, any help would be greatlt appreciated. Peggy"

Congrats Scott, that hat is wonderful,:eusa_clap

Thank you Douglas. All those great photos you, Garrett, rlk and Gene have posted of yourselves, spurred my interest in older raw-edge brims. Now I can quit lusting after your Lord & Taylor!

Thanks. There's no hiding around here anymore :)

I should have known! I didn't bid on that lid. I got seriously distracted by this Stetsonian. My $176 bid was a loser.

I did, however find this BIN Whippet.

We seem to have a price point for good condition size 7 1/4 vintage lids...

That Stetsonian is a tremendous hat - sorry you didn't win it, but if the Whippet fits you, that's a nice hat also. Yep - fortunately the price point is over $100 less than for 7 3/8's.

The seller lives on one of my often traveled trails. I made an appointment to view the lid but had to cancel. I did, however, turn him on to the FedoraLounge during our phone conversation. :D

He said he has a few lids himself......................
