This one was supposed to be my last win before taking a few weeks off from the hat buying frenzy, but, alas, my sniper backfired and so my $76.99 max bid went nowhere, giving the happy winner the chance to walk away with that nice grey Whippet for $71.00... :rage:

That hurt!

Well...one day, when I've grown up, I'll finally have my own Whippet...

OW!!!!!!! Mario, I hate that it happened to you - that was a nice one. But maybe your Whippet - the one with the snazzy color-coordinated (but contrasting) felt, binding and brim - is just around the corner waiting for you. :)

Ha! I suspected that you might be lurking somewhere round the corner...it just had to be you! ;)

I don't know what you max bid was, but my sniper simply reported an error. I went with a max of $76.99, but it was never submitted. That's the second time this happened. The sniper reported that it couldn't place the bid because the seller wouldn't ship to Germany, which is not true (I asked before). I went through the same story last night with a nice grey Borso. Sniper said it wouldn't ship outside the US. I'm beginning to think that Ebay might have changed something to prevent bidders from using snipers, at least when they're in a different country.

What a beauty! *sigh* :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

I was really keen on this one but figured early on that the price was eventually going to be way beyond my meager budget. Three figures are just too much for me to handle at this time. In fact, I think I'll have to stop buying new hats for some time to come. There are just too many other things revolving around me as it is. :(

Dobbs VVL

More on this in the Dobbs Diner, but here are before and after shots of a Dobbs VVL (Very Very Light) I picked up through pure luck, since the listing gave almost no information to go on.

Before de-scuzzification and re-dyeing of the ribbon.

And after a little work.

These just arrived. Strat is purple and just needed a brushing - other than reed wear, interior was perfect. The other hat is an aqua 'suede finish' 3x with an underwelt (7 3/8). Also, a near-perfect sweatband and nice liner, but it had an ancient porkpie crease that I still haven't gotten out, and needs a new ribbon/bow. Very floppy, comfortable hat.

Both have a crispy clear cover over the liner logo. Both seem to be from about 1950.

Also, both were owned by Dr. E.I. Varvel, a Colorado dentist who passed in 1960.

Scott, that Stratoliner cleaned up really nicely. You did a good job with it and the dual pins are great.

Thanks Mr. P, but all I did was brush and bash. I think one of those pins is moving to a new hangar soon.

That Strat turned out to be gorgeous! I guess I shoulda gone for it! (Is there a "kicking yourself" icon? lol )

Seriously, great job on cleaning it up. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap I consoled myself with what I thought would be a too-low bid on that 7 3/8 brown Stratoliner that Lefty just posted. Much to my surprise, I won. :eusa_doh: Ah, well, I'll get over it but I definitely need to step away from eBay for a while again.

Cheers,
Tom

PS Still waiting on that Vagabond to arrive. According to eBay it shipped yesterday!:rage:

Thanks! It's always a crap-shoot with hats that look so dirty and beat-up in the ebay pics, so don't kick yourself too hard (the hat I bid for ended up being a beater :( )

Congrats on the Strat and Vagabond - they are both beautiful hats, and for a forum-hyped style in a 7 3/8, anything under $300 is a bargain.

I also hate to 'take breaks' from ebay, but just convince yourself that almost anything you miss over the next few months will turn up again in the following six.

Stetson Suede Finish 3X

After one more clean-up. Got most of the staining and the porkpie creasing out, then slipped on a leftover Resistol ribbon.

Nice hat, but I don't care for the Mode Edge/thin ribbon combo.
