I'm fairly new at this (a couple of months into it), and have had a couple of successes and some big failures.

Successes:
A "Stetson 3x Western Hat" that ended up being a beautiful charcoal grey Stetson Playboy.
A small, soft, light grey Imperial Stetson that's a perfect hat for my 10 year old son.
A 5x Beaver brand that fits perfectly, (even though it appears to be mauve in color rather than the broiwn it appeared online).

Failures:
A Stetson "Walla" ($32) that ended up with glued-on awful hat band. Am turning it inside out and trying to renovate it now.

Disasters:
An Imperial Stetson that came smelling like formaldihide (or some other toxic waste) and upon any touch of H2O (like steam or a wayward drop of rain), bleeds brown like an open sewer. This one's going to be an experimental challenge.

I'm still trying to land that perfect Stratoliner, Whippet, and Open Road (yes, my father was a Stetson man; and so, it appears, am I).

I thought the black Whippet was rare. I don't think I've seen one before. Thanks Larry and MS. Guess I did alright then. :eusa_doh:

BobC, everyone's coveting the Whippet, but I think you scored on the Marathon. Both are nice hats. Nice trolling...

Thanks, C. I'm hoping the Marathon will be here tomorrow and that it'll be as nice as it looked. I don't have a Marathon or a Lee. I do have an Adam, and I've read that the Lee's have nicer felt than Adam. We'll see.

I paid for a deco ruby ring today. Big chuck o gold with some screaming angular design, two-tone with a ruby. I've had the hots for something like this for a while. I hope I don't have a melt down when I finally get it. I'll need it resized and cleaned.

I saw some way cool things under the search deco/ruby/mens/rings. One seller had several that were in just "like new" shape. After some creative googling I found a chinese auction site that carried the exact same rings for about 10-20% of the ebay deals. I'm glad I cleared from my initial euphoria and didn't bid.

I've said this before, and I know I've been quoted by many, "If it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't."

Edit 07-19-09: Why are there so many references to hats in this thread? Perhaps the heading "Ebay Hats" will provide me with a clue.

Welcome to The Fedora Lounge, Yhat!

Congrats on the Playboy. That's one heckuva good start. You seem to have pretty good taste in Stetsons. Glad to have you aboard!

Hot damn! I was the one who made you bid high on that fellow. I am surprised you were comfortable to bid that high without good pictures?

Another auction for a nice panama that I must have missed :eusa_doh:

Cookie, what kind of hat is this? It looks great!

I think it is a high quality tight woven Panama from the linen-like sheen on it.

It looks in good shape but will have to be stretched considerably but it has a 3 inch brim to play with.

A stretch of Open Road...

Thanks for the warm greeting, hatters!

I'll post some photos of the odd asortment thus far when I get my cell camera working again.

Meanwhile; "Son of a gun!" Not an ebay prize, but I stumbled on an Open Road, box and all, at the Salvation Army store yesterday. Shoot! It's two sizes too small, so I let 'er lie.

Question: with a hat-jack, could I stretch a 7 1/8 to a 7 3/8, or is that too much in defiance of the laws of nature? Knowing that would also open up some eBay options too...

No, but you could buy it and send it to me!

That is almost too far of a stretch! (Pun intended). I have had luck going from a 7 1/2 to 7 5/8 Long Oval. One size jump & a shape adjustment is about it via a hat stretcher. You could get there by sending off & having it reblocked but you'll lose some brim width. JMHO....
