I'm confused about it, too. I'm the winner of that auction. Note the odd liner. I don't know if the "Whippet" was a typo or misprint, or if this is an oddball one, but when I find out, I'll let everybody know. If anybody else has clues, please chime in! I did check the Dating Stetson Liners thread, but didn't find any that resembled it. Because of this, I'm assuming it's a more modern liner, but I have no idea. Calling Dinerman!

It seems to me that this model of vintage Borsalino hats is always in great demand and will always fetch the highest prices on eBay. I don't think this is atypical in any way.

And congrats to the winner for the so-called "wool felt" hat.

That Whippet may have had its brim trimmed or had the sweat replaced with one from a whippet. I have never seen a Whippet with that type of liner. Perhaps that was replaced as well.

The Whippet I've owned before didn't say "Whippet" on the sweat, just on the liner, but I don't see "Whippet" on the liner in the auction pictures of this one. It looks open crown, too, which either means it actually is original, or it hasn't been tampered with since its Whippet-altering reblock. What you're saying is definitely possible. I'm figuring somebody will end up recognizing the box or the liner in regards to age / identity. In the meantime, it's a definite mystery.

I tried to do my homework on here and think it is post '50s. Can anyone tell me what the date likely is and if it is a decent buy? I was hoping to see someone like Lefty post that somebody got a great deal on a great hat, but alas no such references.

Looks a nice hat Jabos. I'd be inclined to think it would be late 50s or early 60s era, not earlier because of the size label style (earlier usually seem to have just 1/4 not 7 1/4), and not later because of the box (assuming it is the one it was with from new) and the liner style (round shape logo). Also after the 60s the sweatbands often were black I believe.

Value - well I think you did ok from what I've seen recently. It's very difficult to work out an average, some hats just get overlooked quite by accident and go for next to nothing, others, especially if they're well described by the seller, can go for far more than they really should. Value of anything auctioned is always what the buyer is willing to pay
The Royal Deluxe, Imperial, Sovereign models seem to get $70 and upwards quite often because they are a better grade of felt or so I seem to recall reading here somewhere.

Rather than list them all, I'll just say that another lot of beautiful, mostly small, cityvintage hats ended today. Only about half of them sold.
