Years ago, I sold a guy a rather rare woodworking plane, a hefty chunk of cast iron, and notorious for being broken in shipping. It arrived intact, but it took the guy a few hours to "un-package". I thought I'd never hear the end of it!
..........and of course if you wouldn't have packaged it so well and it arrived damaged they would have bitched about that. At least you know you did the right thing.

Yeah, you'd think he'd never seen a torsion box filled with expanding foam!

I think some of that carries over to shipping hats though. A hat box should be enough, but given the way things get tossed around in shipping I'd feel better with something more supportive of the hat. Is there a "safe" or "preferred" way to package a hatbox for shipping?

I've never shipped a hatbox.

When I ship a hat I put the hat in a plastic bag of some sort and place it upside down in a cardboard cylinder. I put a ring of cardboard around the brim and fill the box with crumpled newspaper. The plastic I hope, protects it from moisture, the ring and cylinder give the hat support and the newspaper provides padding. So far I haven't had any problems. Oh and I use a lot of packing tape making sure the seams of the box are firmly secured.

Just grabbed this Borsalino. Not much listed in the description or pictures. But the Buy-It-Now price was worthy of a chance IMHO. Will post more on the Borso thread.

A message from our good friend @alanfgag has accompanied every Ebay order I've made for about 7-8 years, now, and I have yet to experience poor packaging. In the (optional) message box on the order forms I always write, "Thank you for packing carefully!" If there's an original hatbox in the sale, I add, "...and placing the hat's box inside of a stronger shipping box." So far, so good!

Thank you Alan!

I always do this ... well since I received a beautiful Dobbs Cross Country stuffed in a priority flat rate box the depth of a pizza box wrapped in news paper

gave a whole new meaning to "flat" rate

I don't blame you, but it gets under my skin when buyers give me packing instructions for hats I sell.

I get over it, though.

Sent directly from my mind to yours.

it would get under my skin as well ... that's why I always say

"i know I don't have to tell you this but it makes me feel better ... " then I proceed to explain the crushed Dobbs and thank them for understanding my position

I do think it has resulted in a few hats being packaged better than they may have been if I hadn't said anything

if so I always mention it in my feedback
