Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Well. I was surfing through the bay last night and decided to make an account and attempt to learn the process of biding, etc. I've bought cars at auto auction before, so I am not totally green , but I have not utilized eBay as many of my cycling buddies have.

I bid on a Resistol Stagecoach that looks good with some need of cleaning and personal touch. I have an idea of what I would like to do with it, and it will be for a learning experience in many ways.

Raises coffee mug...here to new experiences!

For many years I restored older mountain bikes and used Ebay extensively as my source for buying and selling. It was fun but in the last few years it was less fun as the snipe software seems to have taken over the process. Rather than learn it I just stopped bidding.

This Mossant for Sools dark navy, allegedly unworn homburg keeps popping up in my search results for the past 4 months on French ebay and is driving me crazy as I would go for it but it is 54cm and I am approx. 57 cm. I asked the seller to remeasure to be sure but it only made it a 54.5... posting as it is quite nice. I almost want to get it just to look at the construction...

Ignore the reference to "borsalino" - in France, this is a kind of slang for fedoras.

I won the auction. It was an experience. I might have made a misjudgment, and I will know when it gets to me. However, I have some ideas to learn from, and it will be well worth the $20+ shipping to gain the knowledge. Now I am off to the ask a question thread to find out what to do next. Here is the Stagecoach that I will receive shortly.

Not sure 100% what I am going to do. I thought I would get it in hand and see what the hat is like. I have been meaning to get over to the conversion thread and start learning about what all it entails.

I have played with the idea of attempting a Quigley Down Under look just for fun and when I'm out camping or working outside. I really like that hat. While I have always enjoyed wearing hats, this is a new level of hat interest and possibilities. I am finding that I like the larger brims. While I am not trying to be a cowboy, although my wife thinks I am, I do appreciate a larger hat.

I thought I would start by cleaning it up and just seeing what potential lies within. I am open to any suggestions from the more experienced members. I have a small budget, and I am saving up for an Akubra Cattleman in Graphite.

In the beginning of my hat addiction I bought a few cheapo beaters to inflict my learning curve upon. I think it is a low cost low risk way to learn.

I've seen it. I was interested in the box but the seller does not ship outside US. The hat was too small for me.

Me too...I have been using ebay for 20+ years, shorty after it started. I rarely ever bid at all, prefer the BIN or best offer when shopping. I have tried to bid on a couple hats in the 8 or so months I have been on FL while learning about hats and been sniped on every one which is rather frustrating. I have wasted countless hours a day looking for good deals using every imaginable search string. I have pretty much given up on searching for vintage lids, way too competitive even on etsy or the goodwill auction site. No luck at antique or thrift malls and even tried a couple local estate sales....I guess I am not as lucky as some of you loungers even though I have been persistent, oh well I guess I should stick to the sales at the Stetson Hatco outlet in Garland, TX :)

Fckn idiots. I don't care who I piss off or even if it's one of us. 4 days before the auction ends. 2 bidders (and 31 bids!) are playing games...
$19.99 opening bid with 3 days left! You're just driving this hat up in price! FOR WHAT REASON...? I feel like throwing in a $150.00 bid just to fck them up.
