Who's the fool
The one that paid timothiescloset a $300 premium (let's call it a finders fee) on a size 7 hat or the those (with a size 7 head) who didn't?

I know that seller will accept offers at sometimes less than half the asking price, yet the listed price still can show as the final sale price.

Still, I find even half the asking price for many of his hats to be too high.

Asking prices are IMO irrelevant. This particular deal ended at $345 ($45 for the hat plus a $300 'finders fee', as I see it).
- I'm totally excited about the hat and I'm the kind of fool who measures the value of cars in smiles per mile.

You know, there's no arguing with that one, that's for sure: if the hat makes you grin from ear to ear every time you wear it, it was worth it. Wear it in good health!

Sorry for the bad link. But it's this kind of wild overvaluing that keeps a Whippet off of my head. Hope one turns up at a thrift store so I can afford it.

Allow me to wax philosophical: What is a Whippet? A bound brim and a wide ribbon on a hat of certain dimensions containing a specific label. I've had a couple of Whippets come and go through my collection over time, and I have to say that compared to other hats I still own, they were not that special. :) Still, I understand the desire.

I agree with your assessment of a Whippet. From a quality standpoint it makes little sense to pay $$$ for an entry level hat. However actual quality often isn't that big of a concern when we are talking about vintage fedoras. For many, actual quality isn't as important as perceived quality. This was as true when these hats were first sold as it is today. Honestly was there really $80 worth of difference between a $20 and a $100 hat? Hell no. A man who could afford a $100 hat was buying status and perceived quality. $80 worth of bragging rights and a slightly nicer hat than the $20 version.

If status and perceived quality was important to the buyer, then a Stetson 100 was worth the high price. If such things meant nothing to the buyer, then a Stetson 100 was a vastly over-priced hat marketed to rich snobs.

... so I snagged this hat because I absolutely love the look and submitted a very affordable offer that was accepted

to be honest I know nothing about the make ... and apparently the seller doesn't either because I believe who they have down as the maker is indeed just the store it was bought from

if anyone recognizes the crest or has any info on this hat it would be greatly appreciated

is it a Schoble ?

I know that the Whippet isn't a top-of-the-line hat from Stetson. I agree wholeheartedly with the assessment of it being very overpriced nowadays for what it is. I just like the look, and I have heard that the felt of the vintage ones has a very nice feel to it. Sure there are hats that look just like one. Heck, I could bind the brim on my Akubra conversion and have something that might fool eyes as bad as mine, but would it be the same?
I say I want one, just not at the current inflated prices. I will keep looking, and hope for a deal.
