Cool Furious. It's a Knox 20 so decent quality. I'm not good with dating Knox hats (Brad is your man for that), but it looks late 50's/60's to me.
I like those Knox boxes too - have a couple kicking around here.

Thanks, David. I am just beginning to get into things and the two brands that I am looking for are Knox and Cavanagh. Always room for another black fedora, right??

Snagged a pair of Stratoliner pins yesterday (sorry Lefty ;)). These will be great to have (my first) and will of course go on vintage Strats that I already have in the collection. Still puzzles me why we never (or is it almost never?) see them come with the hat.

My take is original owners put their pins away separately from the hats then relatives or other folks find the hats & don't know the pins are associated...

This 7 1/4 Stetson Nutria went for a reasonable price:

Oh yes, thanks everyone for sharing your new finds.....it is actually exciting to see the new hats and this thread both being posted with all the pictures and history.
Not sure about the ribbon thing, though. Looks like a ribbon wrapped around it and stuck in place with the Roadrunner pin.

Reasonable price for a Stratoliner 7 3-8 Long Oval that needs a bit of cleaning up:

Geez what a great deal you found. So many nice hats listed here all the time, a dream to own them all. Is it just me or are there more great hat finds coming into play now than a few years ago? I know a few like RLK and Alan have fairly much found some really nice treasure (and yes a few others also) but it really seems this past year or so the amount of really nice hats seems to be jumping up a a higher number that before? I have actually wondered about that and the actual hats themselves, where have they been hiding all this time? One "trend" seems to be someone had the hat stuffed away and recently Uncle Billy passed away so now the hat is up for grabs but that does not cover the rest of how these hats are coming to ownership by so many Lounge members!?! I keep seeing finds from everyone and wonder what and where are these hats coming from?
Oh yes, nice hats everyone and you also Tom!

I didn't bid on the Nutria, but I did bid and win the Strat. I didn't really expect to win as I'd thought I'd low-balled it with my bid, but sometimes you get lucky. I think the photos and the fact the seller didn't bother trying to shape it at all helped keep bidding down. I'm not complaining; it's the first hat I've bought for myself in quite a while!

Cheers,
Tom

Seems like a very sound theory. I can't recall seeing any here that were discovered in an estate sale with the pin attached. Would be interesting to run across one (don't have much time to get to estate sales currently, so I'll stick with eBay and the occasional antique shop/mall for now).

Good to hear. You've gone through quite a number of these over the years, good to see you're still at it and reuniting them with the type of hats they were initially offered with.

Well you sure found a pure gold deal on it. I think a brushing, some steam and hat sponge and some more steam and then I know you can shape it like new....it is such a wonderful find a real vintage Strat and less then a months wages for the price, hard to beat that for sure.

I have never found a Stratoliner with the pin...but I did find a pin on a Stratoliner in 1943s Shadow of a Doubt.

There seems to be a lot of that going on at the moment. All 7 of the hats he's currently got for sale look to have been chopped, blocked, and badly trimmed.
