Yep. I also question why that hat would be $1000 according to the seller.

Most of us would have had the same reservations with a Stetson 100, or any brand X 100 back in the day.

Heck, we still do...

Methinks an Optimo 1000 today would be less relative clams than a 100 in the '40's.

What we've learned from the Optimo sales: it depreciates like crazy the moment you drive it off the lot.

I think it was the size. Once you factor in what it would cost to size them down, it probably would be better to just buy a new one. I think they would have gone for more in the 7 1/4 - 7 1/2 range.

I won my first vintage hat on eBay, just a few minutes ago in fact! It's a vintage Stetson St. Regis homburg hat:

EDIT: Here's the link:

IMO, this Knox in a 7 1/2 is nicer than any of the Optimos that have sold, and it went for less.
My thought exactly and I was prepared to pay more.
I sure hope the dimensions and condition live up to the listing.

I have to admit I'm finding that to be one tough hat to date.

But admit it, Lefty- you secretly love those black hats.

Glad you won it! I'm inclined to say early- to mid-'40s on it. That particular paper label was being used by 1940 and perhaps a few years earlier, but the sweatband seam is stitched, so that almost certainly makes it post-'40.

My early 30's CC is stitched as is one of my other late 30's Dobbs. Sweatband looks like my 1936 Dobbs Gilt Edge(Its taped ,but color ,embossing edge stitching and profile look same). Under sweat stamp will probably clarify.

I forgot you had that one. My '30s Dobbs Derby has a sweatband like this as well, though it's taped.

Congratulations! I had been bidding on this one, too, but I'm very happy to see it go to a fellow Lounger! :)

Wait, so you have? It is a very nice hat, isn't it? Were you the bidder that was competing with me to the point we were almost tied, "a***l," the one with 10 stars? Thank you for the congratulations, though! I will post pictures of it in about a week when it arrives.

Huckel?

I picked this up on the bay this morning. It says it's a Huckel - It didn't really give much detail. I figured it would be something fun for me to check out for $35 plus shipping.

This is a some what modern Hückel made by TONAK. All Nový Jičín hat factories were nationalized as TONAK after WWII. Both the Hückel and Peschel famlies were expelled and ended up in Bavaria where they started new factories. They both went out of business in the early 1970s. JHS was the biggest / oldest (1799) in Nový Jičín so TONAK used their factory and are still in operation today. It was complicated situation. In my opinion JHS made some of finest hats ever. Their Velours were the finest I have encountered (see my avatar). Looking forward to seeing more details on this one. If you want more info check this link.
