Forgive me if I sound naive but why do you say ads should be considered with caution? is it because, in this case, Hartmann's could have said they're sterling just to improve their sales?

Newspaper ads placed by stores don't always reflect the product. That was the original reason for the Nothing But Stetson Ads thread - to show the information that Stetson was putting out in its ads. (That thread lost its purpose, which was as much my fault as anyone's.) This is not to say that newspaper ads should be discounted, they shouldn't. Factory ads, however, are always more reliable.

I think I recall there being some big difference as to one particular hat. I think JtL had found that a newspaper ad was very different from what Stetson was saying about the same hat. If I find it, I'll post it.

All I know is, anyone that wears that hat should be ready to be called a "basket case."
:)

Funny you should say that, HE. My wife recently bought a hat rather like this one =)
I think she got it at T J Max or one of those places.

Not seen her wear it so maybe there is still hope!!

Echter Mayser

I just won this older size 60cm Echter Mayser. It appears to have a really nice finish (highest quality) plus very good condition. Also interesting binding stitching. Don't see many of these especially in larger sizes.

That one is a quintessential 20's-styled fedora, too, mays. Looks to be in great shape. I have seen so many photos of politicians from the 20s in hats like that. I'd but some of those myself if a short brim looked at all good on me. I have to say, I am glad I was not an adult from 1900 to 1925 before the wider brims began to make their way into popularity. I really, really hate the way I look in a hat with a less than 2-3/8 inch brim.

Thanks! I think this one is from the mid to late 50s. I believe the brim width is at least 2 3/8 inch probably wider. The flange is really curved (which I like) so it might give a shorter appearance. When I receive it I will take some photos with the brim snapped.

I agree. I wasn't saying it was from the 20s, I said it was a 20s-styled fedora. Sort of Homburg-like.

I am pretty sure this a snap brim but it does look nice brim up. I don't think you would see this ribbon width and bow treatment on a more formal German City style hat. They can be snapped too but they might look better brim up. For example this Wegener which has more of a Homburg curl but also can be snapped.
