Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I read some of the commentary from a couple pages back, and thought I'd offer a thought. let's take for example an Open Road that I saw not too far back on Ebay. I believe it ended up selling for $500. I think most of the stuff we see on Ebay goes for auction because the seller wants the opportunity to strike gold. He hopes that one or more someones will stumble along and pay far more than an item might normally go for. It probably rarely happens, but every now and then, all the elements fall into place and a seller "gets rich quick." If he establishes a BIN, some sellers believe they will limit the amount they might achieve by leaving the door open for the buyer to establish a price. I guess in some senses, you might call it capitalism at it's finest. Kinda like buying or selling a used car!

The seller seems to be a pretty good guy. I've bought from him before and we've had some discussions about hats. The Nokabout and the Playboy were up for auction previously, along with another Playboy in better condition in a 7 1/4. I bid on all three, won the 7 1/4 Playboy and was runner up on the other two. He made a second chance offer on the other two when the winner(s) backed out, but as the next lower bids before mine were considerably lower than my highest bid I countered with an amount an increment or so higher than that bid. He declined, and eventually put them back up for auction and sent me a note that they were up again, along with other hats.

I took a look at all of them and replied with my observations on the hats and my predictions on how they would do, and they turned out to be fairly accurate. I did decide to go after the Nokabout again, and as the only bidder will be seeing if it will indeed clean up nicely. :D I opted not to go for the Playboy as I have been on a bit of a spending spree lately and have had a steady stream of large boxes coming into the house. As my wife is unemployed I've been unable to quietly add them to the collection--she's home when they arrive. ;) That, and the sweatband needs replacing. Even so, at that price and the cost of a new sweat someone could have had a very nice hat at a decent price.

I also told him about the Lounge, so we may see him here (or he may lurk to learn.)

Thanks, Lefty. As I recall my counter-offer for the Nokabout was lower than the price I just paid, so he did better in the end on that one by relisting. It's still significantly less than my original max bid, so I'm happy.

Well here is the Open Road that I won and the Tom said it was a good thing he was away in Texas or I would have paid a lot more for. It came with a cattleman's crease. I like a bit less curl on the brim in back than the way it arrived, so I steam-ironed it (wrapped a towel over the brim first.) Turned out great- almost campaign hat flat with just a hint of curl.

I like a good amount of curl so that is looks like a fedora and not a cowboy hat that has banged on the headrest of the truck too much, but that is just my likes.
