I am hoping that this one is as good as it looks.

Well, as I said, I found it compelling for some reason. It looks as though it's in good condition so I'm eager to see it in person and see what it looks like on me. I splurged and bought two others this week, but I am done for a while. Here are the other two:

According to my wife, I'm far over my hat budget for this quarter.

Sorry Lefty, I thought you were the second luckiest member of The Fedora Lounge. :eusa_doh:

Vic - I mean the style of crest. I haven't seen more than a couple. Maybe it's just faded. Is it the same one that's on the No. 1 quality?

St.Ignatz - I only own around 11 hats. If I haven't specifically said that I won the auction, then I'm just posting it as an "item of interest."

GTD I have to admit I'm one of the jugheads that gets over excited about a 7 5/8 LO. I underbid on one and then over compensate on the next. I guess the only cure is to get every hat I ever wanted. That should stop me....unless of course I find one I didn't know I wanted.

What an interesting hat!

Dewhurst posted a (perhaps) useful rundown here:

I bought a Taiwanese straw in Taipei last year for about $30. They're still woven, but they're not easy to find. The weave quality was OK - nothing like a true panama or even a really well woven parabuntal. I'd be interested in seeing more details of this hat...

No 1 Quality is below Royal Stetson, so even with a 7 5/8 Long Oval, I didn't figure it would bring that much for a western even in that nice of shape. Go figure? [huh]
Why do you say No 1 Quality is below Royal Stetson?
No 1 Quality is a Western line, where Royal Stetson is
a dress felt line. Apples and oranges it seems to me.

Speaking for my own 30s No. 1 Stetson, the felt is so
different, I couldn't compare it to any dress felt. Certainly
not as fine, but very functional. The No. 1 Stetson, at least
judging from the pictures I've seen, changed a lot over the
years. And as usual, the earlier you go back the more
desirable it was. And of course there were better and
worse felt runs on various years, as you see in the Royal Stetson
line, too.

The hat in question appears to have been late 40s-early 50s,
judging from the liner. The felt looked pretty darn nice, though.
And all those No 1 Quality hats have such tall crowns!

If anyone has a 20s or earlier No 1 Quality, in 7 1/2 or larger, do
let me know and I'll trade for any comparable 50s Royal Stetson!
Point is, it's very hard to rank vintage hats.
