Managed to snag this entire lot. Not sure I'll end up keeping all of them, but I can always sell them further on, and at ~25$ a piece you can't complain too much :D.

Well, this package arrived at the end last week.

Left to right: grey Royal Stetson, light brown Stetson 3x Beaver, dark brown velour "May Company", tan Dobbs Royal Coachman, brown Dobbs 5th avenue.
The color on the Stetsons in the picture are the most off (they're darker), the rest are more inline with reality, though the two Dobbs appear much lighter in daylight than in this picture.

If anyone wants more pictures, the seller still has his up at his photobucket.

After initially hadling them I wasn't sure what to think - most of them have much shorter brims and ride much higher than my current hats (Fed IV carbon, Grey overwelt Dobbs from no idea when, and the 50ies brown Cavanagh), which made me feel they looked a bit off on me, but after some tinkering, I came to realize that it was more the upper mini-centerpinch + centerdent bash that made them look funny on me, rather than the brim or crown size.

All of them have recieved a good deal of wear judiging from the amount of funk on the sweatbands (nothing some rubbing alcohol didn't manage to take care of), but given the use they're all in rather fair condition. Soiling aside, the sweatbands range from good to excellent condition, and the liners likewise as well - The regular Dobbs has a tiny rip in the lining plastic that I probably wouldn't have even noticed if not for the seller's description, The grey Stetson is flawless, as is the brown 3x beaver Stetson save for a pinhead-sized brown spot just below the emblem. The Dobbs Coachman has some light soiling to the top lining, but nothing too noticable.

The brims on the regular brown Dobbs and grey Stetson were a bit "bumpy" in the front, particulary around the "snapping area", but after lightly ironing the brims with lot's of steam and a clean kitchen towel in-between, they're right back to looking flat and smooth as they should (Did I ever mention I love this place for the wealth of tiny do-it-yourself trivia fixing that people post here? You guy's rock!).

The most interesting hat, the brown fleece-like velour "May Company" one (even though I kind of wish the crown and brim would be a tiny bit bigger on it :p.), is sadly also the one that is in the worst condition, I guess the previous owner liked it a good deal. The lining's rather soiled and not fastend for about 1/5 of its run. The horsehair on the brim accessory thing, which I really dig, is also coming apart, and would either need replacement hair or somehow be taken out & re-glued/bound for proper fastening. Anyone here dealt with these before?

All in all a pretty good deal - All the hats are true to their 7 3/8 size and all are in great wearable condition - Now I just need to figure out how to combine them with my warbrode :D - Thus far only the tan-colored 1 3/4" Cavanagh/guild edge brimmed Dobbs Royal Coachman has seen any real wear from me. If you want the obligatory mugshot, you can get it here .

Speaking of, does anyone have good guesses as to the age of these things? I'm thinking they're not too acient (60ies?), but I really know next to nothing when it comes to dating hats. There are no model names or anything stamped into the sweatbands - The stetsons have nothing but the company name, the brown Dobbs has "Wasser's Greenville, Pa" in it, and the tawn Dobbs Coachman has "The Strauss hirshberg Co.", and the May Company one reads "Fido", which is a model name if I had to take a guess?. And no hidden pricetags/manufacterer info notes hidden behind the sweatbands either.

Looks like a good deal all in all.
I'd say late 60's early 70's. (black sweatbands + logos)

OK, so I know of at least three of us who were watching that soiled Stetson. Fess up. Who actually got it?

The seller must have been on drugs when he/she placed the auction in this category:

Collectibles > Militaria > WW I (1914-18) > Original Period Items > United States > Hats & Helmets

I'm surprised that the three bidders were even able to find it.

I was bidding, but had to leave shortly before it ended. And I had a naptha bath all ready to go....

I thought my 'before and after' pics made it obvious, but okay - I got it.

Using my Sherlock-Holmsian deductive powers, I recognized you as the initial bidder by your 51 feedback...and knew that you had recently picked up an amazing Stetson that this hat could not possibly compete with. Also figured you would be too busy sporting aforementioned hat to have time to soak dirty hats in Naptha.

I'm finding that a weak Woolite solution bath for about 3 hours does a great job when it's mostly dirt. Any dangers in using this method over Naptha?

Here's a Stevens lid with a feature I've never seen before -- a double sweat!

I think the double sweat was the "Moistrap", which added an extra layer of protection between pate and felt...

Why do you call it a Lee? It's a Stevens.
I have a Stevens 3X from around the same period
with similar or identical tags and liner
(it has a self-felt edge and you can use that info
to look up images here if you are curious) that sure
doesn't have that odd feature.

I'd be curious to know if that is more or less comfortable.
I guess it would be more effective in wicking sweat.
