I both lay blame and thank some of you gentleman and your fabulous bowler/derby hats you have posted recently.

I thought I was done for a bit... however this Cavanagh derby at a price too good to pass up caught my eye.

I look forward to seeing it in person... for now the sellers photos

Of course this hat led me to two others I will discuss later.

And I thought I was done. [emoji1745][emoji2357]

As most of you know, I love stingy brims. Last night I was watching a nice Royal Stetson, but I decided to wait till the morning and when I got up, snap, the hat was sold.

Fast forward fifteen minutes. I'm looking for something else and the hat popped up again. I sent the seller a message and he told me the prior buyer cancelled the sale because it was the wrong size. Yahtzee! I didn't hesitate this time, lol....It looks in pretty good shape and for the price, I gladly took a chance on it.

Two Borsalino foldable pocket style hats with grosgrain sweatbands in their little coffins [emoji3545] where it appears they have been most of their lives.

Considering a price I might have even considered for the box alone... and the seller willing to combine shipping I couldn’t bear to separate these two for now. So they are on their way.

The second chance in the hat buying game is probably more of a rarity than the hats themselves! I definitely have had several I missed and still think about..

Good get.

Ah, good to see someone finally pulled the trigger on those two. They were up there for the longest time and at a low price too. I considered buying them myself several times, but I have a few of the boxes already and the hats are not my preferred style. It is a good catch no matter what though. Nice one, Joe.

I was watching that hat as well. My hesitation was over the seller's confusing color description. It listed it as brown & black. I'll be interested in hearing what color it actually is.

There's a good thread in that experience I think (if there isn't one already): "the ones that got away".

This thread already covers "defeats" so a new one would just get merged. I am still kicking myself for not going for this one, but the timing was very bad (just before Christmas). I did make a couple of offers, but the seller didn't bite and, after listing it three times, it sold for just under $75. Probably the only fuzzy O'Farrell I'll ever see and the only one that might have fit (it was maybe just a bit small).

Hi Alan.. I also suspected they may be women’s hats based on the ribbon and styling. Will be interesting to have them in hand.

What would you say is difference between an equestrian derby and a non equestrian derby?

An equestrian derby is reinforced for the rigors of riding - a stylish safety helmet/derby hybrid. The laced sweatband was a common feature on this style of derby. This Cavanagh liner was in use post-WWII - early 1950s, after the era of popularity for the derby/bowler and a little before the style would be revived in the late 1950s - 1960s, though Cavanagh was a champion of conservative styling and might have offered a derby well past its fashion prime. My guess leans to a riding hat. You will know when you have it in hand from the weight and hard hat qualities. Look forward to your report.

ps: the factory label behind the sweat will help to confirm the era of manufacture and perhaps purpose.
